Default $2 TB bypass

Shame on you all for spending $10 or whatever on a TB bypass kit. I bought a 6" coolant pipe and two rubber plugs at NAPA for $2.11 today. I did have to cut the pipe though, but I saved $8!!!

You just have to get to NAPA in the 2 hours that they are open every day

Edit: See a four posts down for more info.

Thats pretty cool. Post up part numbers and how much you cut off for the people that want to do this.

Ok, well I don't still have the part number since it was on a sticker that I had to rip off the pipe, but I will describe the pipe as best I can.

They are technically brake lines, not coolant pipes, but they serve the correct purpose. NAPA has them in assorted sizes in tubes in the back. They are 8" long and have two movable, threaded washer-type things on them, so you have to cut them down to the right size. I bought the 5/16" (1/4" is too small to seal to the passenger-side hose) size pipe and cut out about a 4" section of it (it doesn't have to be exactly 4", just make sure there's enough to bridge the gap between the two hoses).

They also had rubber vacuum covers I guess they're called. NAPA has them lying around behind the counter somewhere in a plastic container with all the assorted sizes. Get one in 5/16" and one in 1/4" since the pipes on the TB are a different size. All you do is slip these over the pipe ends that you're bypassing on the TB to prevent junk from getting in there.

It was $2.11 for the pipe and rubber covers!

So a 6" brake line that is 5/16 thick, cut off ~4in (I'm guessing at the two movable, threaded washer-type things) and a pair of rubber vaccum covers, one 5/16 and one 1/4.

Do you have pics?

You need to end up with about 4" of metal tube left over. The washer things can be pulled off when you make a cut. You'll understand when you see it. The vacuum cover things are optional, they're just meant to keep stuff out of the tb coolant line, which isn't TOTALLY neccessary, but prolly a good idea. Make sure you file any burrs off of the cut metal so no chunks get in your coolant. I'll try to get a picture for you tomorrow.

Why not use a 2ft long 5/16 heater hose?

Well the hoses are different sizes on each side of the TB. The hose coming off of the coolant pipe on the driver's side is 1/4" I think, and the one on the other side is 5/16". How would you seal the two hoses together without some sort of metal piping intermediate?

Sorry, I'm still waiting for a chance to take a picture.

I made mine out of stuff laying around the garage. Some cooper tubing and 2 clamps and still had left overs to do my gf's car to. I don't know why anyone would pay $10+ for it its really not hard to either get some tubing and 2 clamps or just get a new hose that reachs all the way and get rid of the connection.

I'm with you on the napa thing. I love napa they have great parts and half way decent people working there but there never open and the two stores that are near me both have different hours and one is open sundays. Sundays are like prime time for a parts store and they close so early in the week like 5pm i think. There hours really suck.

So 2ft of heater hose, would it be better to get the 5/16 and just clamp both ends, or get the 1/4 a wrestle each end on? ie bigger and use two clamps, or smaller and just 'persuade' it to fit?
