Racer's Lounge - Why do gas pumps cut off at 50$?

I have never understood when paying for gas with a credit card why does the pump stop at 50$, that isn't a full tank for me. It pisses me off because I can't figure up my gas mileage and I either have to do it all over again or fill up more often. Once you slide your card then it isn't like you are going to drive off and not pay. I really don't understand maybe someone can shed some light on this for me. If they want me to pay 2.54 a gallon the least they can do is let me pump a full tank.

Wow, it would suck having to pay more than $50 for a tank. It's only about $35 for me.
But to answer your question, it probably has something to do with the initial auth they do on the card. If that's for $50 then they can't charge more without first doing a larger auth. If the machine isn't set up to do multiple then it may just stop there. That would be my guess anyway.

I've Noticed that as well... But it is only with my debit card. My Visa credit car goes till whatever I need for a full tank. about $55 for my truck.

It probably has something to do with the fact that the pay at the pump isn't able to confirm that your credit card has room on it still, unlike when you swipe your card inside a normal store and you wait for authorization before the transaction is completed. So in order to protect themselves from somebody filling up a huge RV and having a maxed out card, they probably all set themselves the $50 limit just in case. With higher gas prices now, I'm sure they'll need to revise that limit.

this is funny, i had a conv. yesterday about this. my friend has a suburban with the extra big gas tank- 42 gallons. he says he can only pump up to 75 bucks at a time. that was the first time that i have ever heard of that before.

Yup, run into this all the time with my Bronco.
Some stations out here have bumped the limit to $70. Of course at $2.79 a gallon for the cheap stuff out here.. $70 gets there pretty quick.
It all depends on how that gas station sets it up...some are unlimited and some stop at $50 and I have to swipe twice on the suburban...also a 42gallon tank.

Its entirely up to the gas station. what they do is when you go to fill up, and you swipe your card, they HOLD 50 dollars in your account. different gas stations have different hold ammounts. that way they know they are atleast gaurenteed to get their 50 bucks, when you are done getting your gas. They take what you filled up with say 35 dollars, and UNHOLD the 15 dollars in your account. Comprendo?????

same here. It's really common to go to the gas station and put $60-70 (or 70-80 now ) to fill up my truck on a credit card. I've never had it cut off at $50 anywhere.
