I got my new 700R4 in the other day and it had the wrong speedo sensor and tailshaft housing. Long story short, I got the right tailshaft and sensor. So I've changed the gear, but I had to install it with a steel punch and a hammer. I put a few boogers on the teeth and was wondering how true they had to be to get an accurate signal. They're all still intact, just got a couple with spots on them. I'm thinking it's ok but man it would suck for my speedo not work after getting it all installed.

Next time use a 1 1/4" open end wrench to use as a hammer cushion.

Now are you talking about the metal reluctor ring that uses an electronic pick up? Or a plastic drive gear that mates with a plastic driven gear on the other type of electronic sender?
Not that it matters.
If it's beat up but on with no cracks it should work. Ususally if you beat it up too much it'll break in half.

It's the metal reluctor ring with electronic pickup. It had the plastic gears on it. I was just wondering if it would get a true signal to the sensor since a few of the teeth weren't true. It's not beat up, just slipped a couple times when I was driving it on the mainshaft.

You could always clean it up with a small file.
