Default automatic tranny problems

On my way home while in 'D' my car seemed to qucikly redline on the freeeway while going about 95. I slowed down and third gear seems to be all but gone (works til about 3k rpms then quickly redlines and i go nowhere). When accelerating, the car shifts from one-two-and part of three, then the rpm's climb and i can't accelerate anymore. All the other gears work (R, 1, 2,). The gears that don't are partly 3 & Drive (only 1-2-3partly). I ended up taking home the side roads and driving in 2 staying under 45 mph. Is my tranny totally screwed? I'm pretty uneducated when it comes to tranny's and i have no idea if it's just that gear or if the problem lies deeper with the whole tranny. BTW, my car has a 2800 converter & tranny cooler. I have heard ideas from a stuck valve to pcm problems. I'm just trying see how bad my situation is and if i should consider getting a new tranny or try and fix my existing one. Thanks for any insight guys.

my suggestion is this, if you plan on mod. your car, don't throw money down the drain on a stock tranny, just bit the bullet and upgrade to something stronger
