Went to look at an LS1 today... Have a question related to the motor...
Ok, I went to look at a 2002 Camaro SS today, 26,000 miles. I turned the car on and I hear a little ticking noise coming from the motor. Sounds like a clicking. I dont know if its normal for the LS1s to have that noise, or if its a loose rocker arm or maybe a lifter ?
What do you guys think ???

are you sure its coming from inside the engine and maybe not a bad belt, pulley bearing, or alternator? My alternator makes kind of a ticking noise right after startup but goes away after a few minutes.

Did the noise start immediatly after you started the car? Or did it take 30-60 seconds to start? And did it go away soon after, or did it continue until you shut the car down?
Also, did you try revving the motor? If so, did the tick get louder, speed up, or stay the same with increasing rpms, or did it go away/lessen?

Honestly dont believe all of the hype. It does not effect performance or reliability.

Ok, I started the car up, Noticed the noise, I let the car warm up, The noise continued, I then rev'ed it and the noise lessened, But when the motor came back to its idle RPM, The noise was heard again and it was as loud as when I started it up. I then shut it down and the noise was there when I did.

98's are the only ones NOT known for slap. I've never had any either.
It may not be slap, it could be a leaking manifold gasket, that'll make a ticking sound, loose plug, arcing plug wire ect. If you like the car but are unsure about the noise get somebody who know's ls1's to take a look at it. It might be nothing.

241 is the casting number for LS1 heads.
My 02 does exactly what you have described. Sounds like a loud metallic clicking at idle and it doesnt stop until you turn it off. Although sometimes it doesnt do it, but thats rare... Mines done it since I got it(15K miles) up until now (24k) with no detrimental effects at all, healthy dyno numbers and track times .

You have anyone local to you that knows there ls1's?
i dont see your location, if you are close to northern VA i would be happy to take a look at it, if not then find someone close that might be able to.
piston slap is normal, but it sounds more to me like you are describing a valvetrain noise, which could be perfectly normal, it could be very bad, it just depends on how sencitive you are to this kind of thing. I've seen people replace there WHOLE valve train just trying to get rid of the sewing maching sound after installing a cam...

OK guys sorry for just jumping in this thread in the middle of it. I was just reading it and have a similar problem and just wanted to see what you guys think. I have a 2000 Z28. my problem is I don't know if I have an exhaust leak or something more serious. IM a little nervous what you guys think. when I start the car I hear I tiny tick. When I rev the engine the noise immediately stops. When it comes down I don't hear it. its only when the car is at idle. What you guys think??
