Northwest Members - Where to have heads pressure checked?

Need to have some heads pressure checked to test for leaks.

Would like to get it done locally (Tacoma/Seattle) area.

Any one know of any local shops that can do this?

There is a shop south of me but i dont know if they do them or not. They are south of Olympia

Hey Rollin Black, when are you going to make it out to the tracks w/ us sometime.

But not to stray from your topic, if your getting a little oil coming out of your heads it's nothing serious. It's pretty usual for our cars.

Once I get the car sorted out I definately want to join you guys. Never been on the drag strip but want to give it a shot. I have spent my time on road courses.

I only wish my motor problems were a little oil out of the heads. :(

I have an internal leak somewhere in my motor. It has tested positive for combustion gases in the coolant, it overheats very quickly at higher RPM's, and I blow out all my coolant through the overflow tank at higher RPM's :cry:

So, when it all comes apart I want to check the heads to make sure the decks are true and flat, and they do not have any leaks.

Sorry to hear that, I hope everything turns out alright. Once everything is situated we'd love for you to come out w/ us. It's definetly different than autocross, but believe me you'll enjoy it. :thumb:

Have not tried cones (autocross) yet either. Usually rent out Spokane Raceway Park several times a year or hit club events at Pacific Raceways or PIR.

I do want to watch and then get some practice drag racing the car also so will join you guys soon (depends on when the car gets done).

Yea the Company name is Britco Racing Engines. They were out at the track the last couple times we were there. They did my whole engine & were really good. Darion the owner is the guy that does most of the work.

I had a very similar problem in my car last year. Had the heads checked and they were fine. Then I had ellis over at the house one night and we were looking over the old headgasket that was on the side having problems. We found that one of the very small water passage holes that was in the upper right hand corner of the gasket had a path of gasket material about 1/8 wide missing all the way from the hole to metal ring. You could even see on the block where the residue had passed by into the cyl.

New gasket, problem fixed.

The problem showed up after a lap day when I was pushing the car pretty hard. Heated up real quick when the RPMs went up and was blowing into the radiator. when it was cold it was fine. A pressure check cold showed no problems, even when the motor was warm it held pressure, but it wasnt till you started getting into the throttle would it show up.

Yup, sounds exactly like my problem. In addition I have alot of oil consumption also (2K miles on new motor)

I am changing the head gasket as it looks pretty bad like it lifted in a few areas. I just want to cover my bases and make sure the heads didn't warp when the car overheated and make sure the heads are not leaking anything (coolant or oil) to add to my problems.

Then I can put it all back together and hope/pray that my block and sleeves are okay.

I was going to have Ellis look into it (may still) but when I heard he would be out of town for awhile I tore into it myself. If these fixes don't work I may be bringing the car to him after all.

Unless the temp got WAY high, I seriously doubt you warped the heads. Todays aluminum heads are alot stronger than they were a while ago. They can take quite a bit of abuse. I know world challenge cars running LS(X) based motors, run hot. 220* and they dont have issues. They dont even start to worry until it creeps into 230.

Did one or more of the intake tracks on the head have oil in it? If so, check the water passages (small ones) on the gasket for those intake tracks.

The oil consumption might be from running the road course. Lots of high RPMs will make these motors eat a bit of oil. You might look at installing a new PCV valve and ading a catch can. That might eliminate your consumption problems. It did for me.

When I overheated water temp was 252 degrees, quickly pulled over and stopped but it took awhile to cool down.

Light coating of oil in all intake tracks, and intake itself.

Have not had this motor on road course yet, but have almost filled up my AMW catch can just street driving. It's a big cube motor with steel top ring and I hope it is still breaking in and my oil consumption will get better (less than 2000 miles on the motor so far).

I have zero oil consumption problems, so maybe like you said rings are still seating, probably. Hope you get things sorted out and then able to make at least one TNT drag trip before the end of season. What size motor you running?

Hello Robert.

I have a 2001. Actually the stock motor did have serious oil consumption problems and I had it re-ringed and that cured the problem there. However my real problems started when I got the Darton 447 installed. I hope to get it sorted out soon (if it's only heads and head gasket). If it's block or sleeves then it will be a longer time :cry:

Even if I can't make it out with my car this season, I can watch and learn :D

I am glad it was a good experience for you. I know when I dealt with them it was. They knew who they were talking to & He didnt talk to my husband unless I was unsure of something or it was something they were discussing on the side. They treated me like a person that knew what I wanted instead of a body with boobs :bang: ( Like I have dealt with many other times with other shops, stores in the automotive world).

Oh Darions wife is the gal that sits behind the counter she is half owner of the place, Maybe thats where they get dealing with woman like they do the guys. ALways great to deal with them.
