Default Anyone else around here running a 11.5 CR in a daily driver?

Hey guys. When I got my AFR's I originally intended to run them with a G5X3 and flycut pistons. Well that plan changed and i bolted them on milled .040 with a .040 cometic gasket. I didn't flycut and I installed my stock LS6 cam. At wot I have no issues with knock even in the crazy heat we had this summer. My compression ratio is very close to 11.5-is that a bit too high for a daily driver? We have plenty of 94 octane Sunoco's up here but on a recent trip to Jersey I noticed most places only had 93. i'm wondering if maybe I should pull the heads and switch gaskets to the GM MLS and drop the compression a touch. What do you guys think? Anyway car averaged 33mpg at a 80mph cruise-not to bad.

I'd think you would be ok. If anything back off your timing a degree or two before changing gaskets.

You may want to take another look at it if you put in the CheaTR cam. With my 11.0 static compression, it put me at 8.5 dynamic compression. The cam I have now has me at around 8.2 to 1 dynamic and it is much more forgiving on what kind of gas I run. The CheaTR builds some nice cylinder pressure. Torque baby!

Honestly I dont run any less then 11.5:1 in any of my F bodys. With the right tune even in Fla on 93 octane I am fine.

Good point. I think you will be fine with MOST cam combo's, especially running 94 octane. Just have the car tuned real well as I said before.

I'm running ~11.6:1 on 93 octane. I need to get a tune tweak because in the really hot times of the day when the IAT's go through the roof, I'm getting a little part throttle pinging that I need to get taken care of (Mike Norris...are you listening? I need to come see ya.) Otherwise, with a dead-on ***** tune you should be fine.

Patrick, I'm confused-are you saying that I maybe over the top when the CheaTR goes in? Should I maybe put in a 224/228 on XER lobes on a 113 instead? How do I figure dynamic compression? I'm only running 22 degrees of total timing-I found no gain trying anymore. AFR is around 12.8 tested at wot in 4th going up a hill( tested with a LM-1 before the cats). If I don't run the cheaTR the cam I want something very mild with a very wide powerband, something like the F5, or a TSP224 or 225R or even just a simple TR224 on XER lobes or a C2 Hammer cam, all of them must be on a 114 for streetability. Wow that's alot of cams-here I go again!

I have something to put in the conversation here, and maybe someone can confirm my thoughts on this. Putting the stock gaskets back in would lower your compression, but would give you a wider quench. Would this change in quench outweigh the benifits of a lower CR leading to a situation that is more likley to have detonation?

GOOD question...

I would say yes but emperical data is better than a hunch.

I'll be running 11.3 and I'm not worried about it. I'd like to have the 11.5, but since I'm gonna spray it I don't want to cut the heads more than .030 and having lifting issues on a 250 shot.

I thought about the quench thing too. I'm just afraid of running on into a situation where I could get detonation. It was pretty hot here this summer, some days as hot as 100 degress and that's not counting the humidity-BUT-I'm no retard either. My cars a DD so on days like that I just drove it normaly-doesn't make sense to pound on it! I read somewhere that guys in the Hot Rod class (pump gas drags) that have to run on pump gas run reverse split cams?

My guess is that you'd be best off with proper quench than a little bit less compression. Hopefully someone else will confirm that assumption. With 22 degrees of timing, your tune seems pretty safe as well. I run 22-24 deg in south texas heat with spray and have no detonation as of yet. This is however with stock heads.

In texas, thats the norm that most engine builders use.

Vortech, I just did a quick calculation. With your 11.5 to 1 static compression, the stock LS6 cam comes in around 8.32 dynamic compression (still in safe zone). Add the CheaTR cam and your DC goes up to 8.88 to 1. You will have abundant torque down low and lots of power up high. You just may want to look at how it impacts your octane resistance though, that's all.

FWIW, I would keep the tight quench you have with the .040 gasket. That will help with octance tolerance as well.

Patrick your the man! Bro what would a 224/228 on XER lobes on a 114 with 4 degress of advance work? This is very similar to the AFR and the Cartek cam-i think they are on 113's though. This would be my next choice or the F5. Trying to stay with a 114 for driveabiltiy and emissions. What do you think of those choices?

Great choice, I have no issues. We have 91 Octane and I just add a quart of Torco with each fillup. It may not even be necessary.

Man, I would not mess with the cam specs of the AFR cam. The valve events are practically perfect! Advancing the cam 4 degrees would kill about 10 rwhp up top and only give you a small return of mid-range torque. Plus grinding it +4 will really raise your dynamic compression into no-no land with 11.5 to 1 static IMO.

You never realize how much goes into a cam THAT WORKS untill you read your post that disect the specs, lol.
