Default Cranks-Lunati,eagle,callies....why the huge price difference?

I was looking at cranks.....going with a 4.00 inch stroke in a LQ4 block and there is like a $1000 dollar price difference in some of these. Eagle being on the cheaper end and winberg being on the top end. But what is the difference in these cranks. The metal material........the tolerances.....heat treated...yadda yadda. I was going to do a 408 with maybe a 200 shot. So about 500-700 hp. I have not heard of people breaking eagle cranks on the ford side (where I used to be). So, I dont know. Any advice??

when Gen 3 Eagle cranks first came out it took one million hours of human time to have them balanced because of some major screw up... people would not touch them... they finally recalled some as I remember

Now they have it straightned out, appenertly. ...you get what you pay for...

It is true, Eagle had a major problem on their first release of LS1 cranks. People were spending a lot of time and $$$ to get them balanced. As I recall there was also another clearance issue, but I can't remember what it was off of the top of my head.

To answer the original question, I think that the difference in price is a difference in quality of machining and in the materials that are used. I have a Callies crank in my motor and it has held up to north of 1000hp on the engine dyno.

It's true. The quantitative results were in the most recent issue of Time (pun intended)

Eagle fixed the issues with balancing etc..

I would go with an Eagle for most every project 1000hp or less

SCAT, EAGLE and LUNATI all have connections with Haas, which was where I worked. According to my contact at SCAT, eagle was made with Chinese steel. SCAT and Lunati are US made, with US metal. My contact at Lunati also siad that this was true.

All three are great products now adays and even the stock crank will handle high levels of power. I went with Lunati, because they offered my the best deal. I love how every measurment was dead on with the Lunati rotating assembly. All those test tools did was confirm the tolerances were dead nuts, I could have used plasticgauge I don't knwo if everyone has this same luck with Lunati rotating assemblies, or if it was made with love especially for me But If I decide to build the 427 that I should have/want to build, I'm going the Lunati route again.
