I am sure most of you have headed out by now if your in the path of Katrina. So far this morning its a 160 mph CAT 5 Hurricane :eek2: . Looks like it will not only be one of the strongest hurricanes to hit the Louisiana, Miss. coast, but the effects could be felt very far inward.

Here in western NC, I have even buttoned down our houses under construction from the heavy rains we are expected to get. Lots and Lots of plastic.

Good luck.

get out... ive been watching the news for some time now. and for the past week if id been anywhere near id have been as far away as possible. or helping others to do so..

im honestly thinking upwards of 40,000 ppl could die in this storm if it hits like they say it will and and floods like they say it will..

imagine ur home with a lake dumped on it and 200 mph + gust of wind... now imagine all the ppl who are going to be left behind with no shelter from this..

get out and get whoever u can out asap i pray you will do this please!

if id had the money or the way down there i would have brought the truck and loaded up as many as possible in the back and drove inland.. im so afraid no one is taking this seriously as this could really make 9/11 look like a joke

please get out if ur anywhere near any river, any lake or withing 250 miles of the coast!

i heard that the french quarter could have as much as 12ft of sustained water in it if the storm goes up the mississippi. we are 2 hours west of NO and are gettin worried. unless u have a cement house, id get the fuck out of the NO area. i know that i won't flood, if i do then all of Lousiana will flood. i pray for the best for all who live anywhere near the path of this enormous storm. get out if u can, and do anything else u can if u can't. last nite on I49, traffic was nearly stopped at 11 at nite about an hr north of I10

Well its dropped 10mph to 165. I really don't think thats going to make a difference. If the locals are not heading out, they will not survive a storm like this. This may the strongest Hurricane ever to hit the USA since I have been around. And I am 30.

For a matter of perspective:

The eyewall of Katrina is ~35 miles in diameter

The diameter of Beltway 8 across I10 (http://maps.yahoo.com/dd_result?newaddr=i10+and+w++beltway+8&taddr=i10+and+e+beltway+8&csz=houston%2C+TX&country=us&tcsz=houston%2C+tx&tcountry=us) is 25.4 miles.

here is a little update i got from fbody.com from one of the members on there:

"Now for the really bad news. New orleans, Slidell, Kenner, Metaire ect ect are all in ruin. The word destroyed doesn't start to tell the full story. Challmete (sp) which is a city outside of new orleans is where my GF grew up. It's also where her grand mother lived (past tense now). It's flooded all the way up to the ROOFS of the houses among the whole city.

Slidell ( near by as well and where my GF's father and sister live) is practicly gone. Boats are sitting on top of houses. Houses are no longer on the foundations, water is everywhere. I have no idea if my GF's fathers house is still standing, but I only ggive it a 5% chance that it is.

Now for me. I am expecting a total and complete loss. The word on Kenner (where I live and work) is this. ""100% of the city of Kenner has in some way been damadged"". Airial(sp) vido of Kenner showed MASSIVE flooding. There is a mall not 5 miles from my house that no longer has all of it's walls. It's just crumbling and falling with2-5 feet of water going into the ground level. My work is 100% gone. I know that I am now out of a job. Weather we can rebiuld or not has yet to be seen. Massive fires are buring in several places. Some APT complexes are on fire, some have fallen. I do not yet know if mine is still standing or not. Like I said, i am betting on a total loss."- HBHRacing (harlan)

lets keep everyone in our prayers as they continue to find out more and more devestating news about there home towns :(

I am going to take a stab at that one and say from the start of alabama on the FL line to the End of LA on the gulf/TX line. If you car planing on traveling to help out I would call and get specifics on the road closure.

well, my ship just got the word that we're going. right now we're loading stores and supplied on the ship, and i think we're picking up a LCU or a LCAC on the way down, and maybe some Marines (not sure if we are). we were told yesterday to be able to leave w/ 24hrs notice....so by tomorrow afternoon we should be gone and on our way down.

I guess I'll see you there then. We got word today that they're sending us out.

Anybody heard from Ben. Last I saw he said was it's getting bad. I know 2 years ago when Isabel passed my house I thought we had it bad but just seeing the news makes me know how lucky and blessed we were here. God bless to all those still down there and to those going on the relief effort.

Manning Family Update!

Just got off the phone with Penny. Everyone is OK :) She said their house was just fine. They had a few trees down in their yard but nothing major. They just got water back, but cannot drink it. Gaslines are kinda bad. She said that ice is like GOLD down there. Nobody has ice. They were at Sonic getting something to eat when I called. I heard her ask the lady if they had ice and the lady said no. She said that the live across the street from the school and school is expected to have power within a day or two. They hope to have power early next week. She just did some shopping and they have enough food & water for a week at least. They are a bit shaken but OK.

She wanted to thank everyone on LS1tech for their show of support! She said she and Ben will be back on here as soon as phone lines and power are back up. :drive:

Very sad situation... I can barely even stand to watch the news at night since the storm came through. Seeing all these people suffering makes me sick to my stomach. My heart goes out to all that are stranded in that area and I'll be praying for them everyday!

Everyone needs to do what they can to help.. Whether its donating food or clothes or money it will all be a blessing to those people! I am in Birmingham, AL and we have thousands from LA & MS that are staying here and all of our hotels are FULL.. If someone you pay my bills for me I'd be gone to LA in a heartbeat to help out all of those people.. God Bless to all!

Still haven't heard from Mr Bird Mann, but I know he and his family live in New Orleans. Sent him an email tonight to see if they made it out before the storm hit, but he hasn't been logged in here since the 27th. Hopefully all is well and they are all safe. I'll post up when I hear anything. Not sure how often he posts in the Southern Section, or if anyone else knows him.
