Default CheaTR Cam & A4?

I'm interested in a cam with a big split like the CheaTR, because I'd rather not run headers (good ones with catted Y are really expensive, plus I don't want the extra noise). But I'd like it to peak at 6000 to preserve my tranny's life, and CheaTR is way more top-end biased. I'm also concerned about valve spring wear with the ultra-aggressive intake lobe of the CheaTR. I do want to keep my low end torque and retain decent mileage, and the CheaTR seems to fit the bill in those repects. Is there a milder cam out there that would meet my goals, or will the CheaTR work best for me (by advancing it, running duals, etc.)?

i would look into mti's stealth series of cams. not quite as aggressive, but would produce similar numbers with the right setup and be considerably easier on the valvetrain.

The Gt2-3 from lingenfelter is probably what you looking for.Its made to work with your stock exhaust and cats and the hp peaks right at 6000.I just put it in my car and all i have is a lid.It really rips after 4500.Specs are 207/220 571-579 118.5 lsa.Silky smooth idle and better gas mileage then stock cam.realy soft lobes too.

You could do something similar to the cheater cam and just run XER lopes on the intake side of the cam instead of the LSK lobes.
The reason is works so well is because of the huge split in duration. It is very similar to stock LSx cams but with more duration and lift.

The cheater peaks pretty high and carries out long. Talk to TR (after the hurricane) about tweaking the cam (maybe a little more advance ground in) or doing something close like this:

216 LSK lobe
224 lobe from their famous 224/224 cam
115 LSA
0 - 2 degrees advance.

I think might bring the power band down a bit. Don't get hung up on low end torque. You have a 3000 stall so you don't see WOT below 3000 rpm.

I would not worry about the LSK lobe. You'll get a couple years out of your new springs unless you really pile on the miles.

MTI's stealth II cam is a reverse split. It will not do as well on a car with stock manifolds and cats.

A couple of small points: The intake is NOT an LSK. It is similar, but it has slightly less lift than an equavalent LSK. Not a big difference, but I wanted the record straight on this.

Also after my testing I think spring life will be great for most people. I have the Truck Old Man Cam in my 2002 truck. I have put over 30,000 miles on the same set of springs. This truck is my daily driver and it has been on numerous trips across the country. It runs just as good today as when I first installed the cam.

Think of it this way: GM is putting right at .600 lift in the LS7. They have certain durability requirements on new car motors they have to meet, so they wouldn't go that high on lift if it couldn't be made to last...so why can't the aftermarket do the same thing.

If anyone wants some changes made to the Cheater cam as a custom grind, give me a call or e-mail me and we can discuss specifics. Just please give us a day to get past the hurricane!!!

This cam looks perfect for you

If not that, I would take a look at some of the Vinci/Crane Cams and rocker arm setups. Or you could do something like what I did and get a 3 tenth & 3 mph improvement still on stock manifolds & cats.

Thanks for the replies. It seems like there are a lot of cams out there with a 4-8 degree split. But I would think that having a more hefty exhaust duration while keeping overlap to a minimum would be really desirable with stock manifolds and cats. The CheaTR seems to have demonstrated the viability of that approach. Maybe something like a 212/224 on a 115 or so on XE lobes would be in my ballpark.

The 212/218 114 cam is pretty popular for a small torquey cam. You might consider staying on the 114 LSA but increasing the exhaust to 220. That would give you -12 overlap at .05 assuming XE lobes that would be pretty decent at .006.
