Western Members - Moving to Vegas?

I thought I would go fishing for some info. My family and I may be moving to Las Vegas next year and would like to buy a house. Any good info on where to look, what areas to avoid (needs to be safe for kids). Doesn't have to be in town and actually it would be nice to be outside the city.

And any other info on life and living in Vegas is welcome.

My mom is a realtor, she does it part time, so she's not worried about how much she makes on a sale, more about finding the right place.
