Default TR Cheater Cam Question

I have search thru this forum and have found a lot of good threads on this cam, but i still have a couple questions. My car is stock except for SLP intake and exhaust. my car has 54000 miles and it is my daily driver. My question is what kind of effect will this cam have on my car in the long run. I am going to be in school for the next 4 years and can't have the car fail me. Once i get out of school i plan to turn this car into a weekend/ track car. I drive about 13000 miles a year. I saw some people were talking about the springs going bad after 10000 miles or so. I just want to do every thing right at first so i dont have any problems. I am also most likley going to put the AFR 205 heads on and wanted to know if they came set up with good enough springs. Also does any one have any idea what hp or 1/4 mile times i would run with this swap. I already had 125 shot of nitrous and ran 12.5s, but sold the kit to a friend becuase i was worried about destroying my engine. I run 13.5s stock with an 6 speed and was hopping to see some good games since this will be costing me almost 3000. if i'm only going to see a few tenths diffrence it doesn't seem worth it to me at this time. Also can only do stealth mods, becuase have to hide them from DAD. I though buying my own car would change this but as he said my car, but his Insurance.

The springs that come on the AFR 205s work perfect on the CheaTR cam with no additional shimming required. They should be good for 20K miles at least. Geoff from Thunder Racing has 30-35K miles on his cam (same intake lobe) and he's running the same springs as come in the AFRs.

With stock exhaust manifolds and cats, I picked up 65 additional rwhp with absolutely no downsides in fuel economy, driveability, or stealth.

Jason 99TA gained 35 rwhp with cam only running stock manifolds, cats and Hooker catback. A 2001 C5 with automatic, dyantech headers with cats made 42 rwhp cam only.

I see in your signature you have a Loudmouth exhaust. You want silent? LOL, change the exhaust first before you pick a cam if you want silence.

There are many cams that make more power than the CheaTR, but with them come many compromises: worse idle, worse fuel economy, worse street manners, no emissions compliance, heavy lope, no stealth. It's all up to what you want.

well if gas mileage is an issue, do the headers first. properly tuned they will not hurt mpg and may raise it a bit

Jason has an LS6 intake with a ported throttle body. As was mentioned in another thread...if you have very few mods, the CheaTR is a really good. Like if you only have a lid and catback, it will work great.

But if you have all the bolt-ons (LT headers, LS6 intake, ported TB, UD pulley, tuning, etc.) the CheaTR is also very good cam only. Reason why is that it has very good valve events making it a good candidate for running under a broad range of mods. Very, very good nitrous cam BTW.

I have Long Tubes and a Magnaflow CB, lid and stock heads. I put down 401/375. That is with the FAST LSX 90mm intake/ Nick Williams TB though. Currently my best pass is 12.53 @ 114. However that was with a 1.96 60 ft. I know with a decent 1.7 low 12's are possible. The car idles great now with a bit of tuning and gas milelage is slightly improved. I will be doing heads, an underdrive pulley and upgrading to the 85mm Lid and Maf by years end. At that time, i will redyno and am looking to hit the magical 450/400 mark as well as 11.99 et's or quicker on drag radials. All of that while sounding almost stock with Zero compromises and no low end TQ loss.

Scott, I'll back up all your data except that. With LT's and cat-back, the CheaTR cam DOES NOT sound stock. It sounds quite similiar to my TR224 112LSA barking through LT's and a Flowmaster 40 series!

nothing on a 112 grind is gonna sound stock. just tell your dad that you have a misfire and it is only running on 7 pistons.

I said " almost stock " haha, as in Almost Stockcar sounding! ha

No, its mellow, but you can hear the Cam without a doubt. Not as stealthy as the Stealth grinds from MTI
