Default 98 crank vs. 99+ crank

I got a frankenstien motor going together for my 98. I planed on running the 98 crank but with a 99 computer and harness since I have the LS1 edit software for it. I was told today that I would have to change the magnet wheel on the crank to a 99 and later. Is this correct. I have never heard of that.
Thanks

GM Parts shows all 98-02 F LS1 cranks to be the same # 12559354 and that includes the excitor ring.

He said I could run a 99+ crank in an early but not vise versa. There was defanately a differance I looked at both side buy side. I assume the 98' part is long ago superceded.
