Default Best Gearing

wanting to hit 10s with new setup. all suspension work will be done, 12 bolt and so on. wantig to keep it a six speed car. i see every one running 342s with a 28in tall tire, but i think harlan used 373 with a 28incher with his "oldest" setup. which do you think would be best for my goals. will have 500+rwhp and tq, i hope. any suggestions

id say 3 73 should be fine, it also depends on how high you will be spinning your motor to....

He used a 3.70 gear.

Depends a LOT on your weight. My car is heavy as HELL, so big power didn't take me anywhere.

I only trap at 124mph. If I had a t-top car or a formy, I'd be trapping 128+.

not sure on weight, trying to get it as light as possible. took all interior out seat belts in back, spare, no AC, going with light carpet, chormoly cage, dont know what else to do really, want to be able to take it back to stock if need be. according to that calculator a 373 would be good for now, i would just have to change cams in the future to go a little faster. i duuno though

3.73 will be good for street and strip with a 26 inch tall tire. If you are running 28 inch tall tires with 500RWHP I would go with a 4.11 gear.

If you are doing a turbo set-up your best bet is to try what you have first. Turbo's don't require much gear. I'm blowing off new 11.5 x 28 x 16 ET Streets with a 3.08 gear and a #4pump Vig running high 10's at 128mph. I'd slow down with 3.73 or 4.10 gears....no traction.

pick your goal trap speed, pick the tire you want or are limited to, pick your max engine rpm, and you will find the rear gear you want.

its fairly simple math but heres a calculator http://www.wallaceracing.com/calcrgr.php

i wouldn't worry about gears so much. if all you want is 10's concentrate on SUSPENSION. people have gone 10's with less , its all in the 60 foot.

a simple 1.60 should do it with 500 rear wheel.
