Ls1howto instructions tell me that there are 8 to 10 bolts around the peremeter of my oil pan. Well I have a 98 and it looks like two in front five down each side two on the bottom side in the back by the tranny and it looks like I need to remove two bolts that go into the oil pan from the tranny. Also I see some sort a plastic bracket attached by a 10mm bolt that I have to remove to loosen one of those back bolts. Do all of these need to be loosend or can I just hammer on the front of the pan to see if it will drop at all? Thanx for the input. Bolts not loosend yet are the two tranny bolts that go into the pan, one back upper bolt on driverside,bracket, and the two back bottom bolts under the pan. I have eleven bolts loosened.

Why you removing oil pan to remove oil pump? Oil pump is behind the front timing cover.

Correct, but in order to get the pickup tube off the oil pump you have to drop the oil pan about a inch in order to unscew the pickup tube off the pump. Then the pump will come off. I need to be 100 percent sure before I drop all of those bolts, I'm not doing extra work that is not needed.

I removed all the bolts including 2 bigger bolts connected to the tranny to the oil pan and the plastic shileds it should dettach real easy now. You want the pan off so that you can move it around as much as you can to get access to that kinda hard oil pickup tube bolt and stuff a rag in there it makes it eaiser to fish out if you accidently drop it and long pen magnet is handy.

I didn't have to drop the pan at all to remove the pick-up tube. We are talking about an LS1 motor right? Are you using some kind of double roller chain and spaced out pump? If not the pickup tube will come off the pump without droping the pan.

You must have really small hands our some method. I could not get to that bolt without dropping the pan on my T/A. And i wouldnt know how i would be able to get that bolt back on without dropping the pan.

yeah I a must have fat fingers b/c every one I have changed a oil pump on I have to lower the oil pan.

i had to lower all the oil pan bolts and take off the bottom 2 bellhousing bolts to get it to drop. Slip a rag in there and you shouldnt have any problems.

Getting the pan to drop is the easy part. Be glad you're stuck on that rather than trying to get the damn pickup tube bolt out, let alone putting it back in if you have fat fingers like i do. I spent many an hour trying to get that bolt back in ^infinity

Alright, I got the oil pump changed and the pickup tube with the oring not pinched back in there, took alot of patience and swearing,(about four hours) that silly oring man, it just would not get in there, I had to put the pump on about a 1/4 of the way and stuck the pickup tube in the oil pump hole while alighning the pump to seat against the block, I had to use a very small screwdriver to push the O-ring gently up in the oil pump hole and boom, it went right in, seated very nicely. I did remove all 14 bolts including the ones from the tranny,only one bolt that was a pain,second one back on the driverside. Also you must have straw fingers, in order to get at that pickup tube, you gotta drop it at least a 1/2 inch if not more. My fingers aren't fat and I can get into alot of tight spots on are LS1's, but the pickup tube access had to be done by dropping the pan.

i recommend using a swivel head wrench it worked great.

Looks like the guy that said he did not drop the pan is talking about a C5, not an F-body.

Yeah i think C5 ls1/ls6 there easier to get at. I put a 04 z06 motor in my 98z when i changed the pickup tube to put a fbody one on the vette motor the bolt was in a different spot easier to get at v.s the fbody one.
