had a similar code P0420, same code just different O2. It ended up not being the cat or the O2. One of the bolts holding my fuel rail was loose and I was sucking a very very slight amount of air in through where the injector sits on the intake. Was a nightmare to find. Didn't believe the results my self so I had to loosen up the bolt again and the code poped up again, tightened it/reset ECM and code has not come back. Most likely its the cat or the 02.

any way to test if it is the o2 or the cat? cause i had the code for both sides, and i cant just swap the rear o2. i dont want to take it to the dealer because i will be charged for testing if it is the 02 and not the cats. code also recently went away on its own after sitting about 4 days, leads me to believe it was the o2's w/ crap on them that dried up. any ideas? car still under 80k but by end of next summer might be there. thanks.

ok so the dealerhsip is required to change out the cat under the federal emissioins warranty, free of charge? what about the other o2's or am i just pushing my luck? mine's a 2000 SS with 61,000 even though it was originally purchased in arizona if the law is right american here in modesto should comply right?

ok did some reaserch on the federal emissions warranty and it is true . . . BUT you can only do this when you HAVE to pass an emissions test I.E. smog time comes around for your vehicle or you sell it, you can't just go in at any point and fill a claim for it to be done

Is that what the dealership told you? I have friends here in Florida (no emissions) that have had them replaced for free. 02's aren't covered, and neither is the diagnostic fee it they find something other than just a bad cat. Don't know who "american in modesto" is, if it's a dealer I'd call another one.

acutally if you punch in FEDERAL EMIISIONS WARRANTY into google or yahoo and the law is right there and from what it's lookin like is that the only time they will repair the problem is when you have to smog it, but i could be wrong. i'm going into american chevrolet tomorrow to get my oil changed, so i'll ask them and if they give me an answer whatever it is i'll go to one of the smog shops i used to deliver parts to and find out from them and if i need to i can always check with the smog ref of california

I recently come up with that code too, I hope its not the O2's and just the cats not working too well. I have recently change to a Cat back exhaust system and done some other engine mods, tunes a little using HP tuners. Sometime when shifting from first to second at 4500rpm I hear a pop from the exhaust. Decelerting down a dark country lane in second gear about 2000rpm, I see flashes behind me. Appears fuel is igniting in the exhaust system which probably wouldn't do the cats or O2's much good. Think i need ot tune that out, it dosn't happen all the time so may be hard to find.
I have never looked at swapping the rear O2's, are they on a plugable harness? my car done 120,000 miles so I guess they will be pretty much welded in there and be a bugger to remove.

ok checked at american chevrolet today while i was getting my oil changed, first thing they said 'well are you sure it's the cats?" ****** moron! after i proved he was a moron he knew what i was talking about and said all i have to do is bring it in and have them check it out and if it's the cats they'll replace it but i'm still wondering about the other o2's. i'm gonna call the smog ref of cali today and find out exactly whats covered.

I had the same code. I live in FL they replaced both cat's and notified me that one of my o2's were bad. They told me the o2 is not covered by warranty and would be about $180 to fix. I said I would replace the o2 myself, i put it off and now i have a bad misfire on #5 and keep fouling that plug. I bought an o2 now to see if it will fix the prob but i forget which one they said was bad.
