Default 2000 M6 Trans Am - what mods to do?

Lets get this outta the way first... YES I DRIVE A MUSTANG. That's not why I joined the site. I'm here cuz a friend of mine has a 00 TA and has some questions about how to make his car a low 13 to 12sec car. So far he has a Hypertech tuner (didn't do much and I told him not to buy it) and a B&M Ripper shifter which i installed for him and thats it. His car is a M6 and he plans 4.10 gears,headers,Y-pipe,cat-back and a cam. Can you guys suggest any parts do's and don'ts as far as what he should do.

Seriously the best mod they could do is 'Driver Training'.

This is usually the best bang for buck out there.

A M6 Ls1 Fbody should easily be a low 13 car maybe even pipping a high 12 STOCK (climate and altitude dependent). Although 12's from a pre 01 car would be quite rare STOCK.

So add a few mods in there (gears/exhaust/lid) with a good driver and mid/high 12's are by no means out of reach even for an average driver.

first get rid of the hypercrap programmer. a diablo is much better but its still not great. buy a lid and a catback or headers, or go the cheap and sneeky route and buy a cut out. next he needs some tires. MT Drag radials are the best out there in my opinion. and the rest he needs to be a good driver.... or get a better driver behind the wheel

He does have BFG drag radials on the car. I suggested Pacesetter L/T's with matching ORY, 4.10 gears and a cam with 225/225 @50 and lift of 589 intake and exhaust. Shouldn't he be able to hit mid-high twelves without the cam? He has learned to drive the car a lot better especially after messing up his transmission that's why he ordered the ripper shifter. Car wouldn't go into 3rd and sometimes 5th gear. I said clutch fork but he just had it rebuilt.

Heh, most guys on here with a cam are running 11s or lower. He should be able to do mid 12s with just some bolt ons.

LS1's have been driven to 12's completely stock. Depending on your altitude, and if the guy can drive or not, 12's are most definitely possible. I did a 13.08@108.8 stock in a 99 TA. If not certainly intake + exhaust would do the trick.

Headers, Y-pipe (catted or off road), lid, 4.10's, and a little bit of driving talent will get him mid 12's.

Talked with my friend and he's decided on gears (4.10) instead of exhaust mods first. The main reason being is price to install them. Is putting long-tubes on an LS1 that bad? Can it or is it a do it yourself job? If so what's invovled? If not about how much did u guys pay?

It's a DIY job if you have about 10 hours, some ramps, and a lot of patients.

Last time i worked on a car of his it was his 2001 Grand Prix GTP that i replaced the A/C on and he didn't even wanna hand me tools cuz his girlfriend came to visit! You guys are a lot of help! Here's the basic list to get to mid 12's:
Lid
Ported stock TB
LT headers/Y pipe
cutout
drag radials

4.10's will also help, but are not necessary, and will only shorten the life of the stock (weak) 10 bolt rear. Don't bother with a K&N filter, the oil can screw with the MAF, a paper filter will work fine.

since your friend is too lazy to join the board himself and ask the questions himself, i aint given no help except to say the answer to every question you have asked to date is in the stickeys...

start with JRP's super faq's
then "so you wanna be fast"

by the time you are done with those you should have a good base to work from...

you , yourself seem to be a pretty cool person, I'll be it alittle too nice to a friend undeserving, maybe its time for you to switch teams and we would be happy to help you get your stuff flying

Although I've always wanted an F-body I've also always wanted a Mustang. I have to too much money tied up in my Mustang right now to let it go. Two rebuilt and forged 306 blocks in the garage. A used 35k mile 99GT 4.6 and a theft recovery v6 at my cousins house. The main reason I didn't want an f-body (Trans Am) was that my wife luvs'em and I'm not buying another car that I pay the insurance on and can't drive! The first muscle car I drove was an 92 z28 with and LT4 and at the time that was way too much car for me so I bought a 1990 BMW325is with a 2.5L six. Thanks guys you've all been a great help and I'll contine u read what's on the site and take him your advice.
