Fueling & Injection - 99 with 98 tank? (Horrible mileage)

To my understanding 98 Camaros had a 13 gallon tank and in 99 and above theat tank was switched to a 16.8 gallon tank. Even my owners manual lists the capacity at 16.8 gallons....but here is the kicker. Took the car and filled it up when it was damn near on E and the tank only took a little over 12 gallons. Is it possible that I got a very early 99 that hadnt made the switch yet? I also observed my gas mileage and have got about 230 miles out of the tank with the needle very low-again pointing to a 13 gallon tank since Ive been consistently shifting 1-3-5 even if I have been doing mostly city driving and romping on it now and then. Something else Ive noticed though....my check gauges light comes on ocasionally when fuel is low. Could I just be reading near empty before im really ever close due to a faulty gauge? This is all quite an odd dilemma for me.I sure as hell hope I dont have a 17 gallon tank being that im only getting 250 miles on a full one driving conservatively. Thanks for any info.

i think the 98s had a 15.5 gallon tank. I had a 98 Z with an M6 and i usually got about 280 to the tank when i drove it conservatively.

yeah, we have something around 15 gallon capicity. At extremely empty ill put about 14 gallons in, but there's always some left when the guage is all the way down....

If the tank is plastic its a 99 The 98s are metal

i got more or less the same problem, but it's my gauge that's messed up, one time it read half a tank, went to fill it up, by the time i got there i had 3/4 of a tank. last time out i got 13 miles to the gallon, bone stock so feel lucky. 01 A4 btw.
from what i've seen everybody else say, check your filters, oil/air/fuel all of them. maybe O2's too, not sure bout that one though. good luck with ur problem

Only one way to find out, fill 'er up, and run 'er out of gas. And after you push the car to the gas station and fill it up, you'll know. Problem solved! :judge:

good answer, watch out for hils when ont he low end of the spectrum

i ran out of gas on a steep busy hill once,e i ended up having to call the cops froma cell phone to block off the lane so i could get the car down the hill and off the road while i walked to the station

I would recommend to NOT do this. Never purposely run the tank dry, you risk damaging the fuel pump and that is a costly repair if you are paying someone else to replace it.

The '98 tank is a metal 15.5 gallon (58.7L) tank.

Just look underneath and see whether it's plastic or metal. ;)

It's normal for you to reach E with several gallons to spare; that way people aren't constantly frying their fuel pumps when they run it down to E.

If you're getting about 230 miles on about 12 gallons, that's only 19-20mpg. So yes, that is not very good mileage. Doesn't matter whether you fill up after using 4 gallons, 8, or 12... still only going to be getting similar to 19-20mpg (until whatever's causing that is corrected). :)
