Should the coating on my pistons be burning off???
Well I had to pull the heads over the weekend because I had a seeping headgasket. So I soak up the lil bit of coolant that got into the cylinders from pulling the heads off because I hadnt drained enough coolant out and notice that on every cylinder the coating on my pistons is starting to come off. One piston is missing almost ALL of the coating. This motor has only been together for about 2 months.
Is this normal? I will post some pics when I get home.
thanks

i could be wrong but i would think that if u were leaking coolant into the cylinders than it would burn that as well, and cause steam, hence the white smoke usually,so that may have raised the cylinder temps and burned off some of the coating.like i said i could be dead wrong but just trying to use logic.

I havent had any detonation...but I will check the tune again when I get it back together. What I meant about the coolant was that all the coolant hadnt drained out of the block when I pulled the heads and some spilled into the cylinder.

can you read....look above to see the explanation of the coolant POOLED in the cylinders. I didnt drain enought coolant out and so when I pulled the heads some spilled into the cylinder. The only place coolant was leaking was at the NOTCHES in the heads. It was leaking to the outside NEVER got into the cylinders.
I'm not some newbie to headgasket problems. I just had never coated my pistons and wanted to see if this was normal.
So please dont patronize me.

The only time I have ever seen coated pistons was on my buddies GN with a 4.1 stage block. He just had his block repaired (it cracked) and we had it on the dyno. We made two pulls at 30 psi, then cranked the boost to 36. On the 36 psi pull, the block cracked again. When we pulled the heads off, the coating was completely gone. This car was running mid 9's off the foot brake with a FAST system, so I know the tune was right on. Other than the two pulls, It had a 30 minute break in and cool down.
I am interested to hear about any higher mileage stuff and coating wear too.
