Default Why is manual shifting bad????

Just curious why manual shifting an automatic is bad? It seems when you can buy a kit that makes the tranny shift manually on purpose why would it be bad?
I ask this question because I recently rebuilt my tranny (93 700R4) and now it seems like it does not kick down as hard as it should as highway speeds. I also wish the shifts were a little more crisp, they seems a little sloppy.
Anyone have any ideas????
Thanks
