Default How much to build a race engine?

How much would it be to build an engine?

I have an uncle that wants to give me a 350 4 bolt main block. Its been sitting for a while on his floor of his shed so it needs to be bored out and cleaned up. So everything else I would have to buy.

I would like to make 450-500hp at the fly wheel. Perferably low compression so I could switch to a blower or turbo after a year or so. But I also think that would be a ways off so maybe just high compression and blow that combo and then go low.

I would like to know what kind of price range I would be looking at for both combos high and low compression. This would be only parts and the machine labor no labor for assebleing the engine.

This will be a strip only application if that helps.

I know it would just be estimates which is fine with me. Thanks in advance for any help.

depends a lot on what heads (aluminum or iron), cam (roller or hydraulic), and such you want to run. The 388 I'm running right now is about 475-500 flywheel hp, and I'd say it'd take about $6,000 to duplicate. It could be done cheaper if you have the time to hunt around for used deals, or do some of the assembly work yourself.

The motor in my Chevelle is making about 400-450 to the flywheel, and I've only got $800.00 in it. I also did everything myself, and got the hook up on a set of heads, and already had a carb. It dosn't have forged pistons either, so no nitrous for me

not yet!!

I dont think you will get 450-500 N/A on a low compression motor. I got a ton of deals on my 383 stroker and did all of the work myself except for the block work and i have about 3500-4000 in it. Should have about 450-500 fwhp. Well see soon enough. Oh, and to the question, the machine shop who did my work charged 275 for bore, hone, deck, cleaned/blasted, magnafluxed, new cam bearings, brass plugs, and notched for larger crank.
