Question HELP: Auto tranny rebuild opinion

My sister has a 98 trans am. She took it to cottmans transmission in houston because of a slight noise/vibration during shifts. I drove the car and didnt really notice any major problems, but something wasnt right. The owner of the place told us the transmission needs a master rebuild kit. He is charging $1,850 for master rebiuld kit/torque converter, and +$300 with new disks and few other parts. Does this sound right, or is she getting ripped off?
