Push the clutch in all the way, wait for the rpms to drop to the right speed before shifting. Double clutch on downshifts.

Everything helps, the clutch release point, clean fluid in the trans.

My 94 Z28 6 speed is smooth as butter, but my 01 Z28 6 speed is extremely notchy. Not sure why, they are both stock shifters with Lou's short stick. I think the 94 has a better clutch release mechanism. I've never trusted those telescoping throw out bearings.

First, buy a better shifter - can make a huge difference - it did on my 02 Z28. I installed a Pro5.0 shifter and it is much easier to down shift - up was not a problem for me before outside of reverse - which remians a pita. Other things to look into:
* change out tranny lube - I use redline/royal purple
* if your stock tranny has lots of miles you might consider new master/slave clutch parts next time you have the tranny pulled for a clutch install
* make sure you are completely disengaging clutch before shifting, adj the seat/whatever to make it comfortable to push the pedal all the way to floor quickly......

Hope this helps - happy shifting - stevet

Mine feels pretty notchy.... I like the feeling. With my Short Stick, it getting it past the notch lets me know when its in gear.... which can be tough to gauge until you get used to the short stick.

Notchy shifting (assuming technique and slave is good) usally indicates worn sliders and blocker rings in the tranny. Mine was like that before the rebuild.

Oh yeah, I had a stock pilot bearing at about 100k miles that crapped out on me and caused the shifts to be really notchy every once in a while. The problem was that the needle bearings were grinding into the input shaft so effectively the clutch was never disengaging all the way. That's probably not your problem though unless you have weird stuff happening like you hear grinding coming from your clutch with the pedal pushed in but without moving the shifter.

Same thing is happening to me right now, I thought it was the throwout bearing but I took it to a trans shop to have it checked and they told me pilot bearing, my shifts get real notchy sometimes and when I'm coasting with it in gear with the clutch pushed in, I hear grinding that goes and comes. I'm wondering is that something that has to fixed quickly or is it something that can go a month or two.

Fix it asap if it's the pilot bearing. The broken needle bearings chewed up the tip of my input shaft, so I had to buy a new input shaft with my rebuild. The input shaft was $250 or so.

I was going to, but I ended up putting the stock one back in. Long story. If you've been wanting to put in a new one it would be a good time though.
