No Juice

This past weekend I installed my new SFC's and new gears. While taking out the driveshaft we noticed that there was play/slop in the tranny output shaft. I could move it up and down. Is this normal?? If not what is the problem?

Some movement is normal( as opposed to stiff) Excessive movement indicates improper bearing shims AND should be corrected.

I didn't think that the yoke should be able to move up, down, side to side?

You said play in the output shaft. If you have play with the yoke you DO have concerns.

If there is play in the yoke while it's in the transmission you need to look at you tail shaft bushing, but if there was play in the out put shaft with the ds out of the car, that movement is normal to an extent.

So I've found that when the DS is in the car I can take the part that slides into the tranny and it moves up and down, side to side. Just so I'm clear on this, that should not happen?
You think that is the tail shaft bushing?

Yeah if it has play up and down, side to side, with the yoke in the transmission you probably have a worn out tail shaft bushing, or extension housing bushing as GM would call it. I haven't looked at the tail shafts on t-56's very close, but you should be able to remove the tail shaft without much hassle... Any transmission shop would be able to change that bushing out for very little money I would think. If I'm not mistaken it's only like 1.0-1.5 hours labor if you took the car to them and said you wanted it replaced, but don't take my word for it. You probably need a new tail shaft seal also as they usually go out quick with a bad bushing.
