Suspension & Brakes - Hawk Pads Dusting

Bought Hawk HP pads and they dust like crazy ... after 3-4 days of driving, my chrome 5-stars turned brown. Before I bought these, I researched them really well and most folks here said they hardly dust at all.

They were 'burnt in' properly. Is it my driving that's making them dust so much? Can I change my hard driving habits to make them better?

Hawk pads are carbon based, and carbon is dark colored. I don't know who told you that Hawk's don't dust, I wouldn't have told you that, though the HPS's are much cleaner than the HP Plus compound is. I don't know which you have as you only say "HP".

The harder you use the brakes the dirtier they will be. There is no such thing as a dustless pad, and the ones that don't dust also generally don't stop all that well. However there are degrees of dust and the actual color of it. For street use I almost always recommend PBR's over HPS's up front for a few reasons. One is dust, but the PBR's are also less money @ $60, have better bite and are cleaner most of the time.

I do not think my Hawks HPS dust anymore than the stock. It looks less. I wipe the wheels down often and do get some dust. They do stop better than stock.

I've heard that Hawk bads DO dust pretty bad.

I have Raybestos Ceramic pads up front... very little dusting.

My Hawk HPS from Sam have mild dusting, and I have rims that need constant cleaning. In other words if I let it go 2 weeks it would be bad but wiping them down every 3-4 days is no biggie to me.

I have Hawk HPS pads on my car, and the only time I notice heavy dusting is after a night at the dragstrip. Sure they get a little dusty, but I keep the car rather clean so they don't get much of a chance to get dirty :)

Yeah, after about 3-4 dyas, mine have a fair amonut od brake dust coverage, but, as most of you have stated, I wash my more than once a week, so, it's cool. And I would add they do stop/feel much better than the stockers.

The HP+s will dust much more than stock (or most other not pure race) pads. Whatever you do stay away from sbs pads. I had a set of their "touring" pads on the front and they were the worst I've ever used!! More dust/noise than a full race compound and not even as much performance as stock!!! No wonder Tire Rack dropped them.

I found that they dusted a lot more than stock.. just get black zr1's... then you won't see the dust! ;)

Hehe!!! I just mounted a set of Black Chrome ZR1's on my car !!!!! You're right about not being able to see the dust ... ROFL !!!!!

this may or may not help, but my friend was talking about this stuff that you can spray on your wheels and then when they get dirty, you just spray them with a hose and all the crap thats on there just falls off really easily... have no idea what it's called though... maybe someone has heard of it? he said it works pretty well though... won't do anything to decrease the brake pad dust but might make it more bearale.. ;)

My pads dust to all hell. When it comes to washing though, the dust comes practically right off, because my wheels have a powdercoated finish on them. Some will say they're plain and simply ugly, however the dust won't stick when I wash them. That means no more extra money spent on silly abrasive wheel brushes and/or wheel cleaning chemicals that can foul other parts.

FYI, they're actually OEM replacement 17x9.5" Z06 wheels. I say that anyone who plans to recolour or recoat their wheels should consider powdercoating.

My Hawk pads do dust, but not a whole lot. I will try the Raybestos ceramic pads next time around and see how they compare.
