Default Stock Tach Accuracy

All I can say is, damn that thing is slow. I put in my raptor shift light today, and went for a short test drive. In 1st gear, when the shift light comes on, the tack is only at 5100, 2nd gear is a little closer at about 5500, and by 3rd gear its seems to be really close in the 5700-5800 range.

Yep. Just went through the same thing last week.

I wonder if there is a fix for it?

yeah, i discovered this the other day. from idle if i floor it, it will bounce rev limiter when my tach shows 4,800 rpm. motor is untouched except for a lid. i always thought having 2 tachs was lame, especially in an auto, but i am seriously considering it now. it will be a MUST after i get a cam.

Mine hits limiter about 500 early in 1st year. Time for a shift light.

Where can you purchase a shift light for an M6? Where do they mount?

I mounted my light in the ac vent over the stereo. I bought it from Speed inc. You can mount it pretty much where ever you want. I just didn't want mine out. I wanted it hidden just to keep a cleaner look.

this is info on how to install the light, even though this is for a harlan.

I have the raptor. www.raptorperformance.com

Whisper, I really like my Stewart Warner Ultra-Shift shift light. It's a little big for some, but painless to install and I like the digital RPM readout.

My tach is slow to and at Idle the tack reads about 300-400 rpm higher than the computer reads. I got a raptor shift light and put it in the little circle for the driver side window defrost. I still used the stock cover for the defroster but I reversed it so its only noticable when it lights up and it is very bright. It wires directly to the computer so it is dead on and a fairly simple install.

Yeah...to put it bluntly...stock tachs suck in these cars. Mine's always off 200 rpm not to mention the big lag in first gear.

mine isn't that bad. when i have it hooked up to the computer, it is withen 50-75 of the computers reading. I have no shift light yet, and i shift when mine says 6k-6200 or so and i've never hit the limiter. So some of yours are WAY off.

I was to the understanding that our tachs are slow due to the serial connection... I got tired of "guessing" when I had to shift, so I just put in a raptor as well. During testing, I had it set for 2200rpm and it would go over when the tach read 2100, every gear... Haven't noticed how off it is since I set the light for 6100, but I'm sure it's sizable... Just get a shift light and be done with it.

Guys, remember that its not that the tach is off a set number of RPM (although that ay be a seperate issue too) Its a question of lag time. It may be off a quarter of a second, but in first gear that quarter of a second lag may be a difference of 500 - 1000 RPM. Stab the throttle in neutral and watch the tach take a moment to react.

thats basically what I was saying. As you get higher in the gears, its easier for the tach to keep up.
