Default AFR 205cc HEADS VS Patriot Stage 2 & 3 Heads

I have a 2004 GTO A-4. I have already installed stainless works long tube headers with cats, Bassani cat back system and a K&N aircharger. I'm going to be purchasing some cylinder heads and a cam package. The specs on the cam will be 551/551 lift, duration @.050 216/224 and a 115 LSA. I'm goingto use accelerated lift roller rocker arms which will put the lift somewhere around .590ish. So my question is, should I get the AFR 205cc heads or the Patriot stage 2 or 3 heads? If I go with the Patriot heads, I will have enough money left over so I can get a converter also.

U dont need the rocker arms and then u can buy a verter...
Get a set of AFR 205's milled at 62CC,Cometic .045 Head Gaskets and correct length Pr's along with a PTB and Pulley...Have it tuned with that stealthy 216 cam and you'll be one happy guy

Leave the rockers off and get the converter, but please buy a better cam.

Thunder Racing sells their CheaTR cam and AFR 205 as a package for $2560. This includes AFR heads milled to 60cc, and the CheaTR 214/230 .601/.578 117 LSA cam, which has a power band of off idle to 6800 RPM. You'll have to add in some other things as well (like pushrods, gaskets, and tuning, so beware.)

With a TCI Super Street Fighter 3500 for $520 or so, you'd be looking at just about $3500 total for everything if you install it yourself.

A member on the board did 433rwhp through a 6-speed with Kooks longtubes and a catted Y-Pipe with the AFR 205s and CheaTR cam with a FAST LSX90 (not a cost conscientious mod, but it was good for 27rwhp with his setup.)

If that's too much, TEA and PRC both have ported 5.3L heads that are better than the Patriot heads. TEA has a stage 1 coming out that will be around 1 grand. The TEA 1.5s have made 480rwhp with a TSP 231/237 cam and all the bolt-ons, and it runs around $1400-1500, so it's a good head at a fair price. PRC 2.5s run around the same price and have made quality numbers as well.

Lots of choices out there. Make sure you do all the research you can, otherwise you'll pay a lot of money and not get the results you want.

Match up those AFR205s with the right cam, don't buy a cam without knowing the heads you're going to put on.

I have AFR205s and had a custom 216/220 cam made for my 04 GTO. It's been a great cam, but now I'm upgrading to the AFR 224/228 because I want increased top end and know it's made specificly for my heads (and the rest of the package).

Sounds like a VHP/Crane Boss II camshaft, excellent piece that works well with the crane 1.8 rockers. If you would like a set of 2031 PP heads with 2k miles on them, email me. If you want great dependable performance with economy, get the AFR's

I just purchased a set of the 205's through LGM and I couldn't be any happier. AFR makes a very good head.

You're kinda doing things backwards. I wouldn't do cam and heads with out a converter. Better off doing just a cam or heads and a converter if that's all you can afford.

Like mentioned above, I would go with TEA or PRC before patriot. AFR's will probably make better power, but not the same bang for your buck as w/ TEA or PRC.

I'm not really a big fan of the higher ratio rockers myself, just get a cam with the lift ground into it IMO.

Cool

A set of AFR 205 heads and a small custom cam will make great "average" power.

Exactly what a two ton GTO needs!

Dude, you have it totally @ss backwards:

you don't say "I'm going to use THIS cam now what heads should I get?"

You say: "I'm going to use these heads/boltons/engine/application/torque converter/raceweight/etc... now WHICH CAM should I get?"

I would get the converter after the heads and cam. I also went with a cam from Ed, waiting on the heads now (gave the flow and specs for the heads soon to be ordered and installed), then I talked with John @ Fuddle for the TC. All matched up, although the car is a tad lighter than originally planned. Good luck, and be flexible in your plans.

All of our heads come with a 100% pre installation money back guarantee. Enclosed with the heads will be a flow sheet. Feel free to have these heads flow tested and checked out by any independent source. If there is anything you do not like about the heads, send them back to us for replacement or a 100% refund.

Your on 2 opposite sides of the world in your question.
PP isn't after the AFR customers, and AFR isn't trying to sell to the PP customers.
Price is a huge difference AFR being nearly 2x expensive.
There is a database full of answers to the AFR vs ??????
or PP vs ???????? as these questions have been asked more times then Pamala Anderson has had sex.
Figure out your budget and get the most for your money.
If your budget allows for a 2000 dollars set of heads then you will have a better performing car then a 1000 dollar set of heads.
PP is a great budget company and AFR is at the top of best performing heads.

There is no doubt Patriot has some excellent customer service and one of the best return policies. Just keep in mind the cost of removing and replacing the heads if you're not happy with them. Often, the R&R costs will exceed the price of the heads themselves. To save money in the long run, it's always best to put more money into the heads. Buy the best ones you can afford as they will be the foundation on which all your other power is made.

the rockers are a waste if you want lift do it with a bigger cam and save the money, if your wanting a stock power band go with the cheater option and just do a shift kit. I would do more reasearch before you go throwing money at a set of heads like afr, you might find that for your goals you can get away with just having stock casts CnC'd like the patriots. Also might check out WCCH if you go the CnC route.

I would recommend the AFR's especially for big heavy car like the GTO. Airspeed, velocity, etc... it all adds up....

If this is a Vinici and rockers.... Do not underestimate the poteincial... I have a VHP 062 cam with Patriot head and VHP Rockers... I make over 400 rwhp and 400 rwtq-when most said it can not be done...
Good luck...

The AFR's are better..
