R1 vs. Y1 cam poll
I am trying to decide which one to pick, if i do end up being able to purchase the cam.
i dont mind lope at idle, and a TC will be next on my mods list, so it will be usable power, the only 2 upsides i see is that with the R it has a higher duration, but my only thing is, will the Y make that much more power?
your opinion please

Y1 is based on XE-R lobes and the R1 on old Lunati lobes (I think). Therefore, the Y1 will idle better due to the faster ramp rates of the more aggressive lobes, as well as make more power.
The R1 is an oldey, but still is a respectable cam, especially for a blower or nitrous application.

I wasnt sure about the suggested size, but in the end...it is your motor, and if you can stand it to lope hard and have a tad of drivability issues, then what the heck right?
I do however have a stroker cam in a 346. More top end than I want to spin the bottom end.

Unless you get a comprehensive tune, you'll hate them both. Tuning is the key to loving either. That said, the Y1 will have similar street manners as the smaller R1 because of its faster ramps, and will make more power. If you want to go big and will take the time (or money) to do a good tune, the Y1 is the obvious choice, IMO.

I had the Y1 in mine and had a hard time tuning it. We ended up putting a differant cam back in. I loved the power and sound. Idle was awsome. Just having a A4 it didn`t like it so much. If I could have put up with the driving issues I would have keep it. Car in sig with 150 wet shot.
By the way, I had to fly-cut my pistons for the Y1 also!

Im almost positive the Y1 is on XE-R lobes and R1 is on XE (not lunati) lobes. In the next couple of weeks I plan to upgrade to the R1 on a 112 in my car. Im still undecided if I want to advance the cam or not.

I voted Y1. Don't be afraid of a little lope, just make sure you get a good hands on tune from somebody with experience.
However, the fact that you said a TC was next on the list worries me. Stock converter? If so, get the converter BEFORE THE CAM and make it a 3800-4000.
What are you current mods? What are your goals and uses for the car? Is it a daily driver? Much track time?
