There are literally dozens of things that will cause the cruise control to fail. For example, an over/under charged battery, a bad park/neutral position switch, binding throttle linkage, EMI on the speed sensor signal circuit, even burned out brake lights.
I have the diagnostic procedures as listed in the service manual but I would need some more specific details of the symptoms.

my switch that is on the clutch pedal was my culprit... there are 2 switches on the clutch pedal one in front and one behind.... if i remember right the one in the front is the one for the cruise and the one in the back is for starting the car...

An M6 doesn't have a park/neutral switch - it's only on automatics.
EMI means "electromagnetic interference". That can be caused by a number of things but the most common is a high-powered stereo system incorrectly wired to run the power alongside the speed sensor wire. (It can also be caused by an atomic explosion )
What are your symptoms? Will it set but not hold speed? Does it not turn on at all? The diagnostic procedure is different depending on symptoms and usually involves using a diagnostic computer.

Yep. Always check those. I had to screw the upper one down a few threads in both my '01 and '02 after installing Mcleod clutch master cylinders in both of them.
