Default Racing harnesses

I know this a dumb question but, Are racing harnesses street legal? I just picked up some racing seats, and I dont think the stock seat belt is going to work very well with the seats. Are there racing harnesses out there that are street legal?

5 point racing harnesses are technically illegal cause they're not DOT approved. However, from what I've heard, cops will usually let it slide since they are actually better than factory belts. On the other hand, even though the harnesses are safer, hitting your head on the roll bar without a helmet can be a problem.

I will wind up just getting a harness bar. I wont get a 4 point cage.
