I finally went and checked out the new C6's, and just as I feared I fell in love and drove one home yesterday.
apart from what the owner manual says,(after all, they sell engines and parts for a living) how many miles before I give it its first oil change?

in the past with new vehicles I've done an oil change as soon as I drove it off the dealers lot and got the engine good and warm, 50 miles or so.
I also have an '05 Lincoln that got it's first oil change at 500 miles. no problems after 5600 miles.
I've heard some people are having oil consumption issues still with the LS2 engines, so I'm wondering if I should give this engine a little more break-in time with the factory lube.

opinions please??

when did you give your new LSx engine its first oil change, and did you have any consumption problems?

It depends on how hard those miles are too. If you are racing the car from day one, it might be a better idea to change it early. Most builders also do not recommend going with synthetic oil at the first change, as some have claimed there are issues with the rings not properly breaking in with synthetics. I would say 2000 miles should be good enough, these newer engines are "cleaner" than old school engines and do not really need the early oil changes.

I like to change them early just to get rid of the junk picked up in the oil from
the manufacturing process. I use non synthetic on the first change to seat the rings.
Change the second time after about 1500 miles to synthetic and let er rip.

I would change it at 500 miles. Don't go to synthetic until 3000 miles. Good luck.

LS2 comes from the factory with Mobil1, so it already has synthetic in it.

FWIW, I was planning on waiting until 2500-3000 miles to change the oil (based on the advice of both Patman's and Dave @ Redline), but since the GTO doesn't come with a magnetic drain plug I went ahead and swapped one in at 500 miles and replaced with Mobil1 5W30. I drained again at 1500 miles and replaced with Mobil1 5W30. Once I hit 3000 miles I'm going to go with GC or Redline and do extended intervals after that. I don't think anything this elaborate is required here, though. I just did it because of the drainplug and since 5-qt jugs of Mobil1 go for under $25 at Walmart.

I have not seen any oil consumption issues, but then again at the rate I've been changing the oil it would have to be really bad to show up at this point. Also, I haven't been too hard on it except for a few baseline dyno runs.
