I have a chance to buy one of these cars, a 1 owner '97 white coupe w/48k original miles. I know this guy--he's a customer of mine, a guy who takes good care of his things, and this thing is immaculate, completely stock and always garaged w/limited cold weather use. Anyway, I can buy this thing for well under $4k, and am about to drop the hammer, but first...Does anyone have anything bad, or good to say about these supercharged Grand Prix cars? This one is fully loaded, white, w/blk leather gut. BTW, this guy has a 425 HP Hemi Charger on the way--he's 65 and quite the character. Any help from you guys regarding the Pontiac GTP would be appreciated. I know nothing about them, but this looks like a good little reasonably priced toy... WJ :)

I have a friend who has a 99 or 00 GTP. Supercharged 3800 v-6. Not really a fast car. He has had to put multiple sets of breaks on the car, replace blown head gaskets, and several other small problems. Car is unmodded and used as a family car, so no racing or beating on it. I know it does not have many miles on it either.

I had a 98 GTP.
Nice car but it definitly wakes up (& needs it) when you throw in a cold air, custom PCM & smaller pulley.
I did that with mine & it was a night & day difference.
There'a allot more that can be done, but those 3 are usually the 1st mods to these cars.

interesting, ive only heard about those issues with the modded or beaten on ones.
they are nice comfy cars, that have some balls. would make a great DD, and that price is perfect. just make sure he shows u the maintenance records and what not. at that price i wouldnt turn it down. and like butch said with those little mods it really wakes it up. i say buy it.

That car has next to nothing on it for miles. He takes really good care of it, and has had nothing but problems.

When he brought it in for the breaks and the head gasket, he was told those are common problems with the GTP's.

wj, i am actually looking for either a monte SS or a grand prix GTP, they are very very nice cars for the money, and they go pretty good too...we really havent seen many grand prix's in the shop so thats prob. a good sign.

It had 100K on the clock & ran perfect.

I have a 99 GT. It isn't the supercharged one, but it makes a good daily driver. You can't beat the price and the fact that it is in such great shape. The mod market for the 3800 V6 is big. There are many things that can be done to make these cars fast. They are fun to drive and comfortable. You will like it.

warren- they run great when maintained and the supercharger oil is changed routinely but handle like ass . really depends on what your looking to get outta it . then again for 4g's its a steal

In regards to the GTP, I bought a 2002 Supercharged GTP with 14,000 miles on it. This car belonged to an older man and was in mint shape. The car is loaded. I put a K&N air filter in it and that is all for the moment and I love the car. The only drawback that it is FWD, as I am used to driving RWD. I get a lot a compliments on the looks of the car: 2 door white with black leather and the premium wheels (soon to change). Car has every ooption possible. I say buy it, you cannot go wrong. Good Luck!

97 GTP's have one bad thing about them. they are known for electrical fires under the hood.

I can atest to that, my friend had a 1997 GTP that was in the driveway and a guy came knocking at the door to tell her that her was on fire. Turns out it came from under the hood and unfortunately the car burned to the ground. I love my GTP so far, hopefully the engineering is better from 97-02. :)

Thanks everyone for the valuable input. I'm going to pull the trigger and buy this thing as a little project car. Think it'll turn some heads before I'm done w/it and maybe raise the benchmarks for respectability at the track. Maybe. Slowhawk V6 tuning?? WJ

Not really. When it's got a Gen III motor, and a Camaro body, either '69 or '02, THEN, I will be back at the track w/another car...This Pontiac is just a car to use as a DD for awhile, and see if I can make a few little improvements to it. :jest: WJ

My brother has a 2002 grand prix GTP-all black, his mods are an intake, supercharger 3.4" supercharger pully, DHP PCM and SLP headers(dont get them, you're better off with the TOG's headers) and he ran a 13.6, those cars are quck off the line. The car never gave him trouble, very reliable

I had a 98 GTP and I did some mods to it and the tranny lets go at 52k,that pissed me of to no end.I didnt even beat on it,got it fixed and a week later a woman runs a stop sign and nailed me.So 1 month later 3k in repairs later got it back and saw my TA trade time.

UR right, Brent. That '02 roller in NY on the island interests me, but it's really set up for a stick w/all the suspension mods. Automatic is the only way I'll go after the consistency and reliability of my orange car. A Typhoon or Cyclone that's all done up to go 10's could make me jump back in, as well. When I see the right thing--I'll know it..... Nineball's LS6 '69 SS is EXACTLY what I'd like right now.... :eek2: Best wishes Brent. WJ

Well, I've been told you can make them go low 13's w/out hardly spending much at all, 12's spending $2k, and 11's maybe $1500-2k more...but FWD cars just are not my thing for drag racing. I'll spend the $ on RWD muscle. It's a generation thing, you know?? :jest: WJ

Those late 60's SS were one of the best looking musclecars. Blue white stripe my fav. Every once in awhile I think chuck the vette and get one . But then technology hits. I could definatley see you in one of those though.

Check Nine Ball's '69 SS w/supercharged LS6 power, a Viper internals 6 speed, modern suspension and braking, and more in the new issue of Chevy High Performance...It is the balls. :D WJ :burn:
