If you think ya can find(for 5k) and want a 6speed....wait. If the auto is a clean car, good color, etc. jump on it. Like hot said, both are fast. I had a 99 auto first and loved it.

As far as A4 vs M6 you have to figure out what your goals are for the car. If this is going to be a street warrior and see alot of highway time then the M6 is definately for you. If you plan on spending alot of time around drag stips and your friendly neighborbood red light then stall an auto and never look back. If your the type that has to row gears, never granny shifts and always double clutches like ya should (cheesy line, I know) then get a M6 no matter what the cost.
As far as this particular car goes, I'd be very leary about any WS6 that could be bought for $5,000. But if this deal is on the up and up then there is no way you can pass that up. I don't care if you have to have an M6 or not. You can do the A4 to M6 swap for about 2-3K and you'd still have a super cheap WS6 since 8K would still be considered a steal.
Good luck

The car is obviously Salvaged AND has no engine for 5k, or it's a misprint and you meant 15k otherwise you wouldn't have made this thread if somebody was practically giving away a WS6 for free.

My favorite part of drag racing an auto isn't the consistency. For me, it's the fact that autos have run mid to low 11's with 1.6-1.7 60' times on the stock 10 bolt. Now that I am about finished with my bolt-ons I can spend my next $2500 on heads and a cam. Had I gotten the M6 (I almost bought one) I would have no choice but to invest the next $2K + in a rear end.
Now I have no illusions of my 10 bolt lasting forever. But with the heads and cam I'm planning (228/228 cam maybe) I should be able to keep the 10 bolt running for a few racing seasons while I slowly save for a 12 bolt with 3.73's
But all this is definately
I agree that maybe the 5K was a misprint of 15K. I'd double check the price and triple check the car from bumper to bumper. I'd stick with a manual if the car is just for fun on the streets. But if you want to hit the 1/4 mile on a semi regular basis then I highly recommend getting an A4 and putting a 3500-4000 stall in it ASAP.
Good Luck

I suppose it all depends on your long term goals. 11's on a budget should definately look at autos. 10's to high 9's on a budget should definately look at Manuals. low 9's or better shouldn't care because your changing your tranny and rear end no matter what.
And of course stock or close to stock should get whatever makes them happier which for most would be a M6. They are alot of fun to drive
