General LSX Automobile Discussion - LS1 owners under 25... insurance rates?

Im getting killed with insurance currently. Im only liability on my 88 formula (which is about $100/month). I went to my dad (perfect record) and put my 99 T/A under him as primary. Well, im away at school and dont pay insurance on my LS1 but i need to get her down here with me and actually drive the darn thing. Insurance is supposedly going to raise north of $300/month if i take the car outa the garage and put me as a driver on it. Im not 25 yet so i cant seem to get good rates.

What are you younger guys payin for insurance? and with who?

edit: im statefarm btw

I don't have a TA yet, I have a Grand Cherokee and here's some food for thought...I moved like 5 minutes away, to a new zip code, and my insurance dropped $150/month. Take it or leave it, just a thought. Good luck.

Oh yeah, the insurance rate between a TA and my Jeep are pretty similar.

If you are gonna have your name on it under your dad's policy then just leave it like it is. If you're on the policy then you are covered while driving any vehicle on the policy. 'Least that's how mine always was.

The problem is, basically im insured under my 88 because georgia requires you to stay insured. Then, for my T/A, i have my dad under the full coverage and I am under part-time/school driver, basically saying that I am part of the family but i dont drive the car full-time because I am at "school". well im 5 hours from home so if im caught in an accident its hard to say "oh yea i was takin dads car out for a 5 hour spin and sombody hit me". Catch my drift?

But I desperately need my ls1 here. Thus, im looking around because statefarm wants ~$350/month if i "legally" drive my T/A down to school.

my insurance rates are horrible on any car even though I have a perfect record. It seems that in Miami rates are high, but (down here, at least) Geico doesn't charge anymore for a Z28 than for a V6, and all cars cost pretty much the same. The Z28 would cost only about 5-10 bucks a month more than my 97 corolla, and actually 5-10 bucks a month less than a 2003 altima.

So if they're killing you because of the kind of car you might want to consider Geico.

Where you live is a HUGE factor on insurance. Luckily, I'm 24 and pay ~100 a month full coverage for my SS through Geico.

JAvenger007
11-06-2005, 09:51 PM
yea i remem when i was a teen paying less than a $100 for liability. but i need full coverage (i guess?) if the car is going to be hundreds of miles away from what is considered "home" by the insurance company. Because dont they consider liability coverage drivers that are within a certain range of miles from home. I just dont want to get caught cheating the system. ;)

I live north of atlanta so I wonder how much more rates in that area are than others. Im buying a house farther south in savannah in about 3 or 4 months so ill see if that will help my rates.

So Geico will likely give me a fair treatment regardless of owning a V8?

and btw thanks for all the input keep em comin!

I am 18 and on my fathers policy but still paying the bill ( they even bill me seperately) liability and comprehensive (no collision) is like 104 a month. Through State Farm, I think all our insurance is through them so thats probably another reason why its so cheap, oh and the good studen discount knocked off like 400 bucks a yr (i think) if that applies to you, also have a perfect driving record so that helps too

lets see when i first got my formula i was 21 and had 0 dect. on full and i was payin around 500/6 months, after the insurance caught on and found that in the past i wasnt exactly the best person to insure it went up to about 625/6 months. still not that bad i guess for full. after it went up i raise the dect to $1k and it went back down so i didnt worry much... and i was on my own policy...

Trust me on this one. The insurance co. will not ask questions if anything happens. WHen i had my '98 my mom was listed as the primary driver. I drove the car all the time. Got in a bad accident (bad for the bitch that hit me... see this thread (http://ls1tech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=233696&highlight=subpoena) )
Insurance co. covered everything, and never asked any questions about the primary driver of the car.

my old rates were insane, for 2 vehicles (Infiniti G35, corolla) and 3 drivers (parents and me) we were paying over 2 grand every 6 months. We tried adding my brother (just got license) and they tried to up that to 4 grand every 6 months!

So I visited them personally, pinched a deuce on my insurance agents desk, and switched to Geico. I used to hate their commercials until I found out how true they are.

BTW, that was AIG.

$190 month full coverage...(and not the state minimums for each category either, but rather the maximums, dad makes me get the maximums....)

Age: 19
Tickets: 0
Accidents: 0
Location: Minnesota

on my parents policy with me listed as primary driver. This also includes the good student discount, which if I don't stay on the B honor roll in college my insurance goes up another $600 a year....

So as you can guess, since I got my license my grades have gone way up....lol

I hate insurance...just wrote a check to them for $946 or something in that area for my next six months they are rich off of me :(

and you think $157 a month is expensive? STFU.

I believe you get what you pay for. There's a reason Geico will insure most drivers for less, their coverage is most likely not as backed up as say USAA. They won't stand behind you after a devistating accident as much as they could.

How bout progressive? Any good experiences with them?

I called home and i think this is the run down:
im the primary (full coverage) driver on our olds mini-van, since its cheapest. Then im also payin liability on my 88 bird. And my dad is doin full coverage on my T/A since hes over 25. I am a secondary driver on all vehicles. So total im payin around $150 i think. But once I take the T/A down south with me, i guess it pops up to full coverage (which im required to have due to my auto loan?) which is $300+.

I gotta figure this out...

I believe you get what you pay for. There's a reason Geico will insure most drivers for less, their coverage is most likely not as backed up as say USAA. They won't stand behind you after a devistating accident as much as they could.

Well first my insurance is $190 or so a month, but I only pay the $157 because i'm on my parents plan...and If I didnt have my own car their insurance automatically goes up about $200 every 6 months, so they figured they would have to pay that $200 if I didnt so they just pay that part of it.....only le-way I have from my parents...otherwise every penny involved in automobiles has been out of my pocket....

And second I too believe you get what you pay for...however I don't go through gieco or any of those common insurance companies...I actually go through a company called Western National...and It's a company that will only accept you if you have a clean record...so It's critical that I keep my record that way... I never said my insurance was outrageous...I just hate paying it...lol....(who doesn't) I mean c'mon if paying for insurance was like paying to moddify your car...then we would enjoy writing that check...

Honestly, if you are young enough (still in high school or college), your insurance should be on your parents policy. Your car should be insured as a second, low mileage vehicle, on your parent's name, and you should be listed as a secondary driver.

99% of the time this is the cheapest route out.

In case of any incident upon questioning it's a simple as saying "Dad let me borrow the car for a weekend" or whatever. Just don't be retarded.

2003 Trailblazer + 2000 Z28 Vert = $1,600 a year in Michigan w/ State Farm, full coverage. I'm over 25 in the lowest possible State Farm bracket.

Location is every bit as important as age and driving record.

I agree on being under a parent. Even though ill soon own my house (fingers crossed) I'm still a "student" and don't drive much compared to when I worked a 9-5 business day 5 times a week.

I've been told that geico wont insure if you have a ticket or semi bad record. Or if they do it'll be cheap but bad coverage.

I personally have one minor fender bender accident (happened this past july) and one ticket (79 in a 55) that's almost 2 years old. So I don't have a clean record exactly. But I am hoping to be placed as a secondary driver under my dad on my T/A and not have to pay too much.

Statefarm wants 400/month (2400 for 6 months) for me to have full coverage as primary driver on my t/a if I were insured by myself. I live in atlanta so I guess that's a bad area for insurance.

Again thanks for the input guys. Keep em goin lol

Man I am baffled but what I have been reading here. Somebody please help me out. I have an 02 WS6 that I bought, actually mom bought I am just making the payments to her ($350/month) I have been driving the car since late january when I got it from the dealership and just a few weeks ago my dad told me that he was looking at the insurance policy and it said that anybody under 25 was not covered on the TA. I am 22 and I am the primary on my 92 camaro. I pay right around $100 a month for just liability on the camaro. My mom is the primary on the TA and it is $125 a month for full coverage. I just pay her that cost every month to drive the TA. Anyways we called the insurance company to see about putting me as the secondary and they would not let that happen. They said if I wanted to drive it I had to pay full coverage. They quoted me 417 a month! I have 0 accidents and 0 speeding tickets, I have taken defensive driving twice for discounts, and my parents have 7 cars insured through them as well as every other kind of insurance. Oh this is farmers by the way. Can someone tell me why they feel it neccessary to rape me? The car has to have full coverage because of the lean holder requiring it and I cant take it somewhere else because the loan isnt in my name. It might be worth it to get the loan switched over to my name and pay the rediculous interest rate and then go somewhere else with the TA just to get the insurance down.

p.s. that $417 a month was their "premium" discount, with a 1,000 dollar deductible, and only driving the car 5,000 miles a year :bang:

ouch. your kind of in the same boat as me. Them not insuring you as a secondary driver doesnt sound right though. My plan is going to go up to around $200-250 just as the secondary but still requiring you to be a primary on the vehicle doesnt make sense. I am required to have a primary (full coverage) on the vehicle due to my loan on the car but my dad covers that (since he has great rates and i dont even drive the car). Now, you seem to be a premiere customer. 7 cars under their policies and a perfect record?? i think you need to look elsewhere. theres no reason for them to turn down your money. especially if your 22.

OMG! R u guys for real? I'm reading through these posts and I cant help but feel that I'm being exploited. Here's the rundown. Im 19, in university and have been a license holder for not too long (almost a yr.). I have a perfect record thus far, been pulled over once, with cars like ours, its bound to happen  . Well, still im under my fathers policy, and we have a total of three cars under the policy. I have full coverage and I pay 220/month! I know I have the safety of full coverage but still! Does this seem normal? Considering that Im under my fathers policy, the car (98 SS) is under his name, and my record is squeeky clean so far. I dont know, ive always tought that i have payed too much for insurance, looking at this only confirms it. What do u guys think?
p.s: were insure with Allstate. any companies u guys recommend i should look into?

I'm 17 and I'm listed as primary on my 99 Z28 with full coverage and a 87 Thunderbird liability and part time under my parents 04 Sport Track Adrenaline with full coverage and 00 Grand Marquis with full coverage and i pay $2000 a year. So i'm definitly not complaining just can't wait til i turn 18 to only be listed under the 99 Z28.

well its all about your area. north of atlanta is plagued with traffic...and accidents. thus insurance rates are crazy. My parents policies went up hundreds of $$$ just by moving to georgia from ohio.

I spoke with a friend of mine on the issue. according to him, settin up his daughter for insurance while at school (for her 05 scion) he had to put her as primary. the insurance company asked where the car would be staying. when he told em her school, they asked if he was going to be residing at the school (obviosly no) and they responded that if he was not a resident where the car was, then she would need to be under full coverage. shes 20 and still only owes $100/month. But that didnt give me much confidence. It seemed that your policy could be dropped if you were to get in an accident at school.

Anyone else have any input on that? I have statefarm and desperately hope that they will allow me to be a secondary driver under my dad while im at school.

24 yrs old. 02 Z28 Full Coverage, 88 Corolla liablility. 132 a month, policy in my name through SafeCo. Clean driving record (thank you court supervision)

Two things. One if you get the loan into your name and make the payments as you should it will increase your credit rating. Right now it's doing jack for you, only helping your mom. Two, it seems that you may have to look elsewhere for coverage on your TA. Leave the other 6 cars to them, a different company sounds like the way to go for you.

I'm 20 years old (will be 21 in January) and am a resident of Glendale, AZ, and I've wanted to purchase an M6 Ram-Air T/A for the longest time now. Obviously, a loan from my credit union/bank would have to be done. Payment would be no problem, but the insurance would not be. I've only had one incident in my driving career, and it was in a privately owned parking lot (minimal damage and not reported obviously -- no ticket despite the fact that it wasn't my fault). No speeding tickets nor tickets wreckless driving have been issued to me either (knock on wood). I've been quoted for a minimum of $500 per month for full coverage + $500 deductible (required by the bank). That'd be on my own policy, as my father has told me time and time again that I must "show responsibility" by having my own policy due to the "radically dangerous nature" of the car. So, having him put me on his policy right now is completely out of the question even though I'm in my 2nd year of being a full-time college student plus full-time assistant manager at a local hardware store. I really hope that when I can get my career started at Palo Verde Nuclear Plant (intership program first, though) unless I can magically start paying for insurance by myself. For those who want to know, my zip code is 85306. You guys have it good for your insurance plans. Keep in mind, I already tried the "but the Camaro is different though" excuse-- didn't work. The quote was about $5 less per month. I've tried Progressive, Encompass, American Family, Farmers, Allstate, and Geico. It really is a shame.

I pay 800 for the full year with classic car insurance, but have to have my truck in my name also which is 1500 a year. both have $500 deductibles and I am 20 going to be 21 in january also. See if you can get any student discounts. Saved me a couple hundred a year, at least for my truck

You have it easy... I'm paying $2057/year CAD for my 98 z/28 M6 and $1757/year CAD for my 88 SC Auto.

That's $1740 US/year for the 98 and $1486/year US for the 88.

I'm 24, clean record and live in city. Hence, if you find yourself staring at $1K or less a year, take it and run.

Ok guys, If the insurance is right, my parents have agreed to let me sell my 98 accord and pick up an LS1. Only if the insurance is anywhere near what they are going to pay next year, full coverage on the Accord is going to be around 2700. I am 17 years old and have been driving for about 14 months with a clean record. Yea I know its irrelevant because Im young, but is there any chance I can get Full Coverage(they want it that way) for an SS Camaro( I saw the SS and its 7.5 K with 73K in miles, 6 speed everything is clean *drools*) for around 2700 a year for full coverage? Im going to have to be the primary driver and its going to be less than 5K in miles a year. Pretty much school and back and just going out w. friends etc...Am I dreaming hoping for rates like that ? About 230-250 a month w/ full coverage ? Im trying to sell my car for about 8.2K and with the difference maybe picking up a shitty older car to put me as the primary and have my mom as the primary on the Camaro...Stupid Insurance is holding back the purchase...The phone calls to insurance companies begin tommorow...

This is kinda funny, but when we were playing around with who in our family gets what as primary driver insurance, our 05 Accord would have cost more if I was primary driver. 2400+ vs my $2057 for the 98. Your full coverage on the SS should cost you more for a few reasons, its newer and its a sports car. The good news is, its not a car that is technically for your age group, but it is a sports car. So expect at least to pay $3000+ for an SS. SS and Z/28 are seen as the same car by my insurance so its not a big deal for me, maybe for you.

I've had a Camaro since I've had my license. Just got the 98 this year, had a 88 SC 305TBI/A4 before that. I'm 24 now, next feb, looking forward to the drop in insurance.

I'm 19, and insurance on my daily driver, an 89 mazda 929, is about 130 bucks a month, liability only. Insurance on the T/A right now is about 180 for full coverage, but that's only because it's listed under my mom's name. God knows how bad they'd rape me if it was in my name. :eek2:

WOW! I just read this thread and I guess I am a LOT luckier than i thought!!! Holy Shit I cant believe what most people are paying for insurance! I am 23, single male, and since I turned 16 I have had two speeding tickets and no accidents on my record (the speeding tickets were in a buick and in a mercury topaz HA HA). Anyway, I have two cars... my daily driver is a 00 Cavalier Z24 5 speed with FULL coverage and my 99 Trans Am WS6 M6 is my secondary car and it also has FULL coverage and with full coverage on both cars I am paying about $170 a month total. I used to think I was getting ripped off. Apparently it works much beter to have the Cav listed as the primary car and they charge me about $125/month on that and with the TA as the secondary car they charge me about $45/month. By the way I own both cars and they are completely in my name on the title's and insurance.

American Family wont even insure me because i have to have 5 years of exp (21 by their rules, the 14 y/o law doesnt count :(). To go through another company to insure me it's $250 a month full coverage with $500 deductables. If I cheat and leave my 93 Jeep on my policy ($30 a month liability with good grade discount) I can have the car listed under my mother as a secondary for her and it's still $130 a month, full coverage, $500 deducts. That is with a multiple insurance discount (4 vehicles, 1 house). Keep in mind the car will be garaged and is parked in an area where i cant even remember the last car theft. I also may be getting raped because it is a college town.

As much as i'd like to cheat and park my jeep for insurance reasons, I'd love to sell it and put the money into a car.

Insurance absolutely rapes people.

i just turned 25. i have two fender benders on my record. i pay about 220 for full coverage for my Z, my Expedition, and liability on my cavalier. that's with USAA. but you have to be military to get insured through them though.

best bet, get married, and put your wife as the "primary" driver. you can still drive the damn thing. if your dad is the primary, are you the secondary driver? you could still drive it that way.
