Default big block rods

I looked at a 396 bored to a 402 with pop up piston's and it has stock rods and crank. I want to know how strong it is. I am wanting to run 9’s or better at least.

They are just as strong as 454 or any other stock big block, The motor will hold up fine running nines with the right parts on and in it. Make sure the crank is a forged steel piece and the rods have 7/16" Rod bolts, if they don't replace them. The drawbacks of this motor:

Only aftermarket head that will work on them are made by Edelbrock, nobody else's to my knowledge will fit the small bore size. I have done a little research into this as I had a 396BBC in my chevelle.

My specs were:

396 .030 over
TRW forged pistons @ about 11:1
Comp 305 Hydraulic cam
stock oval part closed chamber head, no port work done & small valves
victor single plane intake & holley 850
NOS Big shot system - 275hp shot
Car was 3800 with driver
On the motor it ran 12.50's
On the 275hp shot it ran 10.50's

As you can see this motor was very tame and simple, with better heads or head work and solid or roller cam and a little nitrous 9's won't be a problem.

Hope this helps!

I wouldn’t use stock rods with much horsepower. I’ve pulled a stock rod apart before and you can get aftermarket rods fairly inexpensive now.

i never said it was impossible i just said the car would have to either be light or be a nitrous junkie or have a lot of money into it with a good upper half

id say a 454 if you could find a good one, depending on what your budget is, you could builda badass 496 stroker or run a .60 over 427 like i am they can be pretty mean too..
