Default How DO YOU KNOW WHEN YOUR TRANSMISSION IS GOING?

I was wondering what some of the sounds/mechanics a transmission would make before it is going out. I dont know if I need a new clutch or a new transmission. I can put it in every gear fine. But whenever the clutch is pushed to the floor, it makes all kinds of noises. Im not sure what the signs of a bad transmission are. Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks

that noise you hear might be the throwout bearings. Thats a pretty common sound with most t-56's i've ever heard. All of mine have done the same.

Yup, mine is doing the same thing also. I got a 2000 SS. It starts fine and everything but when it gets hot I guess lil by lil the little rattle noise starts chirping and won't go away. It makes that noise after I step on it a few times. I took it to the shop and they told me it's my thr out bearings and wanted to charge me around $200. I bought warranty through my bank but haven't took it to get fixed. Don't know what type of clutch to put in since my gears get stuck once in a while. Is the thr out bearing external or internal. Not an expert on engines.

the TO bearings are internal, I'd try to replace the clutch while you're in their on both of those cars. Otherwise you're doing the same work again shortly or paying for it again. My 98 has gone 125k on the stock clutch and I seem to be lucky. It's apart for the install at this very moment.

Do some stop and go driving to warm the clutch up and cruise about 65-70 in 6th, then mash the pedal and if the rpms go up momentary and then fall back again, the clutch is slipping. However this doesn't necessarily mean that it's far from failure if it doesn't slip. If it does slip, you've prob got about 2000K max before it leaves you stranded.

..oh and you should also replace your slave cylinder while you're in their too. You need the upgraded 01+ slave, it's the only one GM sells now.

Yea, ive done that at 65-70 and no slipping. Just after a hard launch a really nasty smell that hangs around for like 10 min. Then there are the noises galore when the clutch is pressed in.

TO bearing. Get that taken care of now you know what it is. It's a $15 part, and it's a shame it takes so much time to change it out.

You can get a heck of a deal on the complete z06 clutch setup + hydraulics from SDPC if you do not plan to do any big power mods. Comes with Fly wheel, Pressure plate, Clutch, and of course TO bearings

In order to put the throwout bearing in, do u still need to take the whole transmission out? Or is it something that is resonably easy? Where can I buy just TO bearings?
