I was trying to figure out if I should take out my Cats, and replace it with a straight pipe on my v6, but i'm a bit afraid that it might sound a bit like a ricer.

It's already getting to that point with a hooker exhaust when the RPM's go to about 4-4.5+ grand

I would like to take out the cats, to free up the exhaust and hopefully make it sound a bit meaner and deeper toned. It has the hooker Muffler, so it wouldn't be free of restrictions, but I was hoping with the hooker muffler, and the straight pipe, it might sound a bit deeper toned then the way it sounds now.

If anyone has done this, please let me know how it sounded to you, and if you have any suggestions on how I can do this without getting a v8 then please post any suggestions.

There is this V6 with gutted cats around here, and it dont sound good at all.

if you have a v6 dont worry about sound..... it'll never be as good as the LS1. i'd worry bout power if i were you and that 3rd gear in those t-5s

on my old v6 i replaced my cat with a straight pipe and had a flowmaster...it would fool people at idle because it was real deep and sounded V8ish, but once you give it gas, its a different story. i recommend it though, its about the best you can do with a V6 as far as sound goes.

V8ish? You will never be able to get it sound close to an LS1. I think removing the cats would just make it sound like total **** and the difference in performance is not even going to be measurable. If you need to get rid of the v6 to get an LS1 powered car, insurance fraud is your friend.

I've heard a 3.8 with a cutout before and it didn't sound bad at all at idle... but above 3k... RICE! Up to you, your car.

I tried several different setups on my old v6 firebird, and sadly there is nothing to give it the sound you'd like. I tried a stock Camaro SS exhaust, Flowmaster, etc. Several will sound pretty good and deep at idle but all of them will get kinda ricey about 3500. The only thing I can suggest is just keep swapping mufflers out until you find one that best suits your tastes. Good luck

My first fbody was a v6 and i had a sweet setup, honestly I always got questioned for having a sleeper V8 but it was a V6 with Pacesetter Headers, aftermarket cats, dynomax ultra muffler with some induction done. Fast as a turd, could out run 94-98 Gt's but it's setup was about as close to V8 sound as you would get. Great idle sound, good mid and 8+ top end sound.

i myself still have my 1996 3.8 liter camaro (powerdyne) but i had pacesetter headers and straight piped (3" all the way back) with a flowmaster muffler, thing was loud and beefier then hell, i always get compliments and people always swear its a supercharged Z28..by the sound

My daily driver is a Supercharged 3.8 v6 Monte Carlo. I got headers with no cats nothing till the flowmasters with the exception of a small glasspack as a resinator to ilimate rasp at high rpms. This setup is perfect. You can check it out at www.cardomain.com/id/thrasher245

V6s sound like hell w/ no cats unless they are high compressioned engines. The only cool sounding V6 i've ever heard are the SHO Yamaha engines.

I actually like the soud v6 camro make with a flowmaster american thunder, it doesnt sound like a v8 but at idle it has a nice rumble, plus I like the idea of getting a v6 camaro just to see the difference
anyway speed limit where I drive is 30 , 35 so.....
but as far as sound they dont sound that bad guys.... I agree that compare to a german nice engine its nothing but compare to asian v6 low-end
there is a stang 06 v6 where I live that also soud decent
I would get something basic like a catback, not worth investing too much on those

I hate V6's with exhaust. This guy I know has a V6 camaro with a magnaflow on it and he always tries to impress me by revving it up . It probably doesn't really sound as bad as I think it does but the fact that he has a tribal skull sticker on his windshield, "racing" seat covers and those metal pedal covers completely ruins the car for me. I go past him at WOT as much as possible to remind him that his car is gay.

hey man try to do headers with no cats and true duals a guy i know has that and it sounds familiar to a v8 but not an ls1 , my lt1 doesnt even sound like the ls1 it has a deeper tone.

Big cams really help the sound of a V6 at idle, especially the 3800.

Honestly, not much you can do. I had a 2001 GTP, with a bunch of mods, heads/cam, ported blower, a lot of boost, and the best way to make it sound good was to give it more boost to make the supercharger cover up the sound of the exaust. When I took of the converter and added headers to it, and a prety lopey cam, it sounded good at idle, but when you drive it...

IMO a LOUD v6 does not sound too good. On my 99 Monte carlo Z34 with the 3.8 v6 I put dynomax ultra flo mufflers and got rid of the rear resonator on the car. It had a nice deep sound...wide open it wasn't ricey at all IMO and it was plenty loud for a v6. Nothing compared to a v8 but I did my share of research for mufflers for that car and dynomax was the way I felt I needed to go, and after having them on there I didnt regret it at all. Sound very nice for that car.

Well, seems some people think headers go a big way. I would get a cut-out, but I know from experiance it would sound like ****.

I took the cats off for some laughs, and let it run staight pipe, and it didn't sound too good at all...

Seems the pacesetter headers are liked by quite a few, and the 3 inch dual exhaust though. I know there isn't much you can do, but the cam along the way will probably also help.

The muffler's gonna be the tricky part =/
