Default Did they offer 3.42 gears in the 96 SS with an auto?

The 96 SS I recently bought appears to have 3.42 gears. On the highway in overdrive, I'm running around 2200 rpm's at 70 mph. With the 275/40/17 tires and the .7 overdrive that works out to 3.42 gears. I assume somebody swapped out the 3.23's and must have reprogrammed the computer and speedometer. It might also be a complete rear swap since the rear is covered with surface rust and the rest of the underside of the car is clean and rust free. Is there any way to identify the rear end itself with stampings or codes on the axle tubes likes the old Camaros?

No automatic ever came with 3.42 gears. To find out what the car should have come with, you can check the RPO code (side of the door or glovebox). It will be prefaced with GU and then a number, compare that to the post at the top of the page to see what the car came with originally. Whether it's the same rear or not I do not know, my rear end has no markings on it whatsoever.

Yeah, I know that no autos came with 3.42's but I was wondering if SLP would have done a rear swap. I have the GU5 code for the 3.23's. So I jacked the car up last night and checked to make sure and they're 3.23 gears.

no..some did get the GU6 RPO and also another one(thinking it is a "Y" one) that meant it has a performance package. I know a guy with the 3.42s in his automatic 2000 V6.
