Default Oil pressure seems a little high...

i replaced my oil pressure sending unit on my car a couple days ago. i have a ported LS6 oil pump, and the motor has 145000 miles on it. before i broke the other sensor, the car held about 40 -45 lbs of pressure at idle and only got over 65 or 70 at wide open throttle. now, the car idles with the pressure at almost 65 when its hot, and upon cold start up it is almost 80. i had to use channel locks to tighten the oil pressure sending unit in the block b/c the only socket i could find at local parts stores was the right size, but not deep enough. is it possible i could have over torqued the sensor or undertorqued it and the reading is thrown off by this? i put mobil 1 10w30 in it this time. usually use 0w40 b/c of the mileage and blowby i have. when i turn the key on, the oil pressure gauge goes to 0 so i know the sensor is good, and am pretty sure the gauge isnt messed up. any thoughts???

You are my hero for putting 145K on a LS1. That says a lot for the motor if it was idling at 45psi. If the sensor is the only thing that you changed, and the oil,, it should be OK right? The difference in oil weight probably has something to do with it, but 15 lbs sounds like a lot. The 10-30 will definitely give you more cold pressure than 0-40. With that much pressure, I would drive it another 145K.

Something dosnt see right. I hate to say it, but id try and replace the oil pressure sensor again, and try and use the forrect tools as you may have damaged the one in there now. A ported oil pump, even if its heavily shimmed, should not have pressure that high at idle.

I have 106,000 miles on my car. TSP ported oil pump straight out of the box. Mobil 1 5w30 and warm idle is 45-50psi. Cold idle is ~65psi. WOT is near 80psi. I think it's just the different wieght of oil causing the high pressure.
