Default Stock Oil Pump Replacment on 99 SS w/52K

I'm replacing my stock LS1 Cam in my 99SS with an LS6 cam. I'm wondering if I need to replace my oil pump too. Oil pressure is fine, but I've heard 98-99's have problems with oil pump failures. I'm already planning on putting in a new timing chain (LS2).

Thanks for the help

How difficult is it to change the cam and the oil pump? I know at times my oil pump pressure stays for a while at 35 then I have to drive her for a while till the car stays at or around 40psi. And changing the oil pump myself would save me a lot of money. I already changed the water pump so i know I'd have to remove the water pump.

your oil pressure is fine at 35-40 PSI

dont waste your time and energy with that cam. Spend the extra $200 and get a TR224 or better. The car will ilde and drive fine

Thanks, I've looked at the TR224 cam but I'll pass. I want somthing that is undectable and has stock reliablility, ie no replacing the valve springs every 15-20K. I don't want a choppy idle, surging or any of the bad manners that come with bigger cams.

Anyone else care to comment on replacing the oil pump? Do they really start to go bad as early as 50K? I always though these engines should be able to go 200k without any internal parts replacement.

I have 90k, and pressure is 40-45psi at hot idle, 55-60 warm cruise, 70 WOT. If it ain't broke don't fix it, unless you're doing a cam swap. Then it'd be worth it for cheap insurance. If you get good springs, you won't have to change springs every 15-20k. All these high lift numbers you're seeing with LS1 cams is because of the 1.7 rockers they have stock. With 1.5's or 1.6's, the lift numbers would be the same as any other similar sized cam for a Gen I or II smallblock, so the ramp rates really aren't quite as radical as they appear.

IF YOU HAVENT DONE ANY OF THE TWO BEFORE IT WILL BE VERY DIFFICULT, SPECIALLY THE OIL PUMP. I PUT MY 408CI A FEW MONTHS BACK AND NEVER THOUGHT ABOUT CHANGEING THE OIL PUMP UNTIL RECENTLY IT WENT OUT.. SO I BOUGHT A LINGERFELD ONE(WHICH BY THE WAY ITS VERY GOOD) AND HAD TO INSTALL IT.. IT WAS A BITCH SPECIALLY BECAUSE OF THE SMALL BOLT THAT GOES ON THE BOTTEM OF THE PUMP.. LIKE SOMEONE STATED BEFORE A CAM IS A PRETTY BIG JOB, AND IF YOUR JUST CHANGEING IT TO AN LS6 UR JUST WASTING YOUR TIME AND $ ON THAT CAM. LISTEN TO OTHERS THAT ALREADY BEEN THROUGH YOUR SITUATION IN THE LONG RUN YOU'LL SAVE MONEY AND TIME..... I HAVE A FRIEND THAT HAS A TEXAS PERFORMANCE CAM AND DAMN THAT CAR SOUNDS STOCK, DRIVES STOCK BUT PULLS HARD. I WOULD SUGGEST YOU GIVE THEM A CALL AND BY THE WAY THE KEY TO HAVEING A DAILY DRIVER WITH A CAM& HEADS IS IN THE TUNE!!.. JUST SEE MY ENGINE BIG CI WITH BIG *** CAM 230/247 639/647@114
