Fairly Reliable's probably picked up the car for $12K, give or take. Add $800 for the wheels, which the guy trading in the car would have been lucky to get. Start at $13K, negotiate from there.

If you already blew your wad with a big grin on your face during the test drive, back track a little. Tell the dealership:
1. insurance is gonna kill you, you're a 20 year old male.
2. gas isn't cheap for a V8 (they may retort that it gets good gas mileage, remind them that you are a 20 y.o. male and are actually going to DRIVE the thing).
3. you have to set aside money for different wheels since you don't like the ones that are on it. I have TT2s, so I'm not bashing the wheels, but they don't need to know that you like them (if you do).
4. you prefer black over white exterior, so it's not exactly the color you would choose.
5. a car like this is higher in maintenance than the Honda your parents want you to buy.
6. you will probably get more tickets than if you were driving a Honda.

Remember that you are doing them a favor by buying the vehicle, not the other way around.

Thats way way too much money. I don't think you'd be able to finance that if you are going to be financing. Most places won't finance more than high bluebook, which is maybe 15k.

yeah thats what i thought the price is high...but then i went to kbb.com and i get 20,050 for the car so i guess the price is right for around idaho? no matter what kbb says 20 is way more then i want to spend i didnt want to go over 15k 17k max! ill just have to keep lookin for others and keep checkin in to see if they still have it and if they do in a few month since it is wenter..then i might try and get the price were i want it!! the car is just what im lookin for as far as white,m6,ss, and it is a plus that it had leather and low miles, the stock part sucks but other then that its just what i want.....price just sucks

Keep looking dude, stick to your guns and set a limit as to what you want to spend. It looks like you've done that already, hard part is sticking to it.

A better guide for a buyer is edmunds.com, look at their used car guide and specifically at the TMV. This is based on what the cars actually sell for, according to edmunds. What the hell, here it is:

http://www.edmunds.com/tmv/used/index.html

You have a good plan. If that car sits for over a month, you'll have a good chance of getting it for $15K, maybe less. Go in before the end of the month, a day or two before the month ends. Walk out a couple of times. Tell them, "I like the car, but..." and use any excuse that will get them on their heels. Then, hope that others haven't shown alot of interest.

And remember, if you buy the car for 15K, it will cost you almost 16.5K with tax, license, and registration.

If you use KBB, make sure you check out the wholesale prices ("wholesale", not "retail"), that's what these guys are paying for the cars. If the car lot paid more than wholesale, it'll be tougher for you to negotiate since their margins are smaller.

No, play dumb. Use reason and logic as your weapon. If you show them the info from Edmunds or even KBB, their easiest answer (way out) is "those are guides, we set our own prices".

Use them as your guide, not your reason to justify a lower price. Find examples (like the fewI listed plus many others) of why that car shouldn't be priced that high, and talk them down to your level. When you say "I'm gonna pay more for insurance...", how can he logically argue that? When you say, "I prefer black cars...", how can he reason if he's selling a white car?

Don't, and I mean DON'T, name your max price first. This includes the trap of "how much can you afford per month". Let him talk price first and what "they can do for you". If he says "we (as the dealership) are way too into this car" meaning that they paid too high a price for it, remember that is their problem, not yours. Don't feel sympathy, they are Fairly Reliable Bob's and you are a 20 yr. old kid trying to buy a car. They have the deep pockets, not you.

FWIW, I got a 02 A4 SS with 8600 miles, all options plus some extras like 345 hp SLP package and chrome ZR1s for $19.5k. (From a private owner) You can do better.
Really, look up the value of the car online on Kelly Blue Book - kbb.com

Honestly, don't buy one for more than 14k. If you're looking to spend over 20k just buy a used ZO6 for high 20's.
