Disadvantages with a th400 over a 4L60E?
I am sure this question has been asked alot. But I was wondering what are the disadvantages with the th400 over the 4l60E. I know that you loose the overdrive and that you will loose some rwhp. Anyone know about how much it robs you. Also, I use a OBD2 guage to check my trans temp in the 4l60e would that no longer work if I swapped for the th400.
What my problem is............I currently am putting around 520rwhp thru my stage 3 4L60E, and over the winter I plan on bumping the rwhp up to around 650-700rwhp. Eventhough the trans is rated to 850rwhp I don't feel all that great running the 4L60E, and was looking to go with the th400, But wondering about the down falls of that trans.
Any opinions or fact would be great.

Weight, efficiency, no lock up, no overdrive.
From M6 to very efficient TH350 I lost 37RWHP but gained .3 in the 1/4. There is another .2 in there as soon as I get over the mental block that there is no longer a clutch to break.

What is exactly the difference in the th350. From what I thought, it does not weight as much as the 400, but can not hold as much power as the 400 either. What else is different between the 2

TH350 can hold as much power. It is more expensive to build. I upgraded to an aluminum drum, better clutch packs, hardened shafts, upgraded rollers and sprags, and I have floaters between the 2 - 3 clutch packs. The TH350 will not eat as much HP as the TH400 either.

i drive an hour and a half to the track w/ TH400 - 67 mph with 28" tires is max cruising speed for my car.
Jay - since you have a 3.73 gear, cruising at 70 would be no problem, and a lot quieter than my car. i think i heard 2,800 rpm w/ 3.73 and 28" tall tires somewhere.
the only other dissadvantage is the weight. but then again - you have to take the hit sometime if you're going to be pushing that much power to through it ya know? the TH350 trans... i don't know. they're lighter and more efficient, but i wouldn't trust them in a high h.p. application unless they were in a very light car. that's JMHO. they're also more expensive to build than the TH400.
