A CRANKSHAFT pulley and a harmonic balancer is essentially the same thing. Some crankshaft pullies are indeed underdrive units.
LS1's dont use a traditional "harmonic balancer" as do LT1 cars and SBC/BBC's, so we usually refer to them as the pulley, or crank pulley.
