Tell me why the turbo guys don't use shorty headers?
Like... the Hooker or Edelbrock shorties... Why don't folks use them for turbo applications, I believe the Ford guys do... is it a fitment issue? Or would the welds blow apart? I have not held a set of Hooker shorties in about 4 years but I recall them looking pretty sturdy.... Thoughts? This is for a friend of mine who is looking to do a custom turbo kit very soon.

Its more of a durability issue John. Those manifolds typically have to hold the weight of the turbos, and they do not flex/warp/crack under high exhaust temps. As you know, shorty headers have never really shown any gains on an LS1 anyways, which proves that manifolds work about equal in terms of performance.

truck shorties crash the steering shaft if you try to use them in a car.
Car ones point in the wrong spots.
cast manifolds are cheap even compared to shorties.
The ford guys use them cause they fit, and can be had in stainless for under $200
are you ever going to just try something John??

InconFormula (Steve) is making 1500+ with unported truck manifolds, and have two seasons on them, and are still going strong. Granted, well built headers (Hi Flo, PTK, etc) will most likely make more power than the truck manifolds, but as stated above, shorties don't help much on a NA engine, so I'd doubt that they'd help much on a FI engine. Looking at a set of truck manifolds, they look pretty damn good-flowing.
Let me know if you need a set of brand new (~500 mile) truck manifolds, I know where a set of 2005 5.3 manifolds are F/S locally. (For 2005, the 5.3 manifolds and the 6.0 manifolds share the same P/N, and both are without EGR/AIR.)
This is what 2005 5.3 manifolds look like:
