Default Tell me why the turbo guys don't use shorty headers?

Like... the Hooker or Edelbrock shorties... Why don't folks use them for turbo applications, I believe the Ford guys do... is it a fitment issue? Or would the welds blow apart? I have not held a set of Hooker shorties in about 4 years but I recall them looking pretty sturdy.... Thoughts? This is for a friend of mine who is looking to do a custom turbo kit very soon.

I would think shorties would be ideal for FI apps.

you can't beat a cast manifold for duribility and i dont think the shorties will give you any more power over the cast manifold.

i dont know what the car manifolds look like but the truck ones are prety sweet.

Right as shorties would work good, we have really good truck manifolds to work with. As stated, they are stronger and will hold the heat in a lot better then headers.

Its more of a durability issue John. Those manifolds typically have to hold the weight of the turbos, and they do not flex/warp/crack under high exhaust temps. As you know, shorty headers have never really shown any gains on an LS1 anyways, which proves that manifolds work about equal in terms of performance.

truck shorties crash the steering shaft if you try to use them in a car.

Car ones point in the wrong spots.

cast manifolds are cheap even compared to shorties.

The ford guys use them cause they fit, and can be had in stainless for under $200

are you ever going to just try something John??

no he's chicken

tiago got his truck shorties to work after cutting them and rewelding them to fit, even welded a vband clamp to the end.

InconFormula (Steve) is making 1500+ with unported truck manifolds, and have two seasons on them, and are still going strong. Granted, well built headers (Hi Flo, PTK, etc) will most likely make more power than the truck manifolds, but as stated above, shorties don't help much on a NA engine, so I'd doubt that they'd help much on a FI engine. Looking at a set of truck manifolds, they look pretty damn good-flowing.

Let me know if you need a set of brand new (~500 mile) truck manifolds, I know where a set of 2005 5.3 manifolds are F/S locally. (For 2005, the 5.3 manifolds and the 6.0 manifolds share the same P/N, and both are without EGR/AIR.)

This is what 2005 5.3 manifolds look like:

Im using shorties from JBA for a H2 6L hummer... with modifications lol

I would have used manifolds if I had had the time to find a set. We'll see what it does this weekend

most people on here build on some sort of a budget john

that being said i think all of the top 'kits' replace the manifolds with headers, i gather you are talking about one off set ups.

I had the choice John......... between Truck Manifolds and Custom Headers.... You see what i chose....... I really dont think theres a power difference... Look at kevins white TA..... I did it for other reasons.... and im glad i did.

You'll reach the limit of the turbo before you run out of header/manifold....

think there the same but not postive youd have to check the part number or get some pics.

I know that from like 2003-present (post EGR/AIR junk) the 4.8, 5.3, and 6.0 manifolds are identical, even share the same part numbers. I also know the Stenod car is using older (2002) 5.3 manifolds, and they seem to work ok.

With what turbo? Are you referring to the truck manifolds or shorty headers? At what point will the truck manifolds/shortie headers be "maxed out" (assuming there is no flow advantage between the two)? Steve Turley is making 1500+ with truck manifolds, a 98mm turbo, and a 408, is he near maxing the manifolds out in your opinion? Based on what you've seen, and the pics above, what is the "max" for a set of truck manifolds? Honestly, I'm waiting for someone to try a CRAZY (101-106mm, A2W, etc) truck manifold based setup. PSJ, you up for it? I found a crazy deal on a 2400hp A2W IC.
