Default A Street-Car M6 only thread about gears

how many people with 4.10s in their 10 bolt and only drive on the street have problems with it breaking.

I am not much of a track goer...possibly once or twice a year...

just thinking about changing my gears along with my rear pinion seal and curious how many other STREET ONLY cars have broken their rear ends while driving.

if you did break it what fluid were you running? was it while you were driving hard? during a shift? on the highway?
did you check your fluid level ever? often?

Thanks
Louie

I broke my 10-bolt with 4.10's pulling in a mexican restaurant for lunch. I had a TA cover too The Zexel Torsen broke.

I also broke a ring gear (4.10's) motive just driving down the road (45MPH) it ripped the 2 ring gear teeth off.

You will be fine with it just driving on the street. Do not beat on it with drag radials or slicks. It really doesn't like any wheel hop either, so if you have wheel hop get some lowers and fix that too.

Cheers.

my old 98 Z28 and my current 99 SS both have had 4:10's....

and neither has had 1 problem with the rear.

i had both proffesionally installed. and use syn. fluid.

and take it easy on the rear...... no big clutch drops.... no smokey burn outs....

in fact this SS with 400rwhp is still running its stock clutch!

Ive got 4.10's in my 10 bolt with Nitto DR's and I drive my car hard most every day, Ive been to the track a couple of times, ive done smokey burnouts, and also have wheel hop. I havent had a single problem or any noises. Just make sure if you get the 4.10's put in, that the guy knows what he is doing.

4.10s have been in my car for the past 2yrs and about 20k miles. No problems. I have the slp auburn diff and run redline syn. I have also made about a dozen passes at the local track in the last year. A good install is the key to happy gears.

The fact that you are running on a stock clutch is probably helping you out. I know of at least one instance where aguy was running almost the exact same numbers as you and when he put in the spec 3 the rear gave up. On the street no less shifting in to second gear. Also like ls1muscle said proper set up can make a world of difference. But it is not a miracle cure. No matter how good it's set up the parts themselves are not all that strong.

I broke my 4.10's after only 3k miles on the street, shifting 1-2. Car had about 5 track passes on it at that point. The ring gear lost 5 or 6 teeth.

I'm thinking of going back to 3.73's for some added strength.

I put 4.10 gears in my 02 WS6, had them in for over a month and a half so far so good. There is definitely a noticeable difference ( I went up from 3.42s )

Damn! What brand of gears are you running? Motive? Richmond? You say you don't have a rear end Girdle?

They are used Motive 4.10's

The rearend is stock other than the gears..

Now, finally.. at the track the other day the posi wouldn't hold.. the rear pass. side must have gotten worn down to the point that under a heavy load (burnout and launch) I won't hold any power.. but it didn't break and its still very driveable and quiet.. just won't hold.. so I have to put another in it soon.. i'm curious to see what it looks like..

I've never heard of this happening... 99% of the people I see on the internet and at my local track with these rearends break them, they don't wear them out.. lol
