Question Turbo Exhaust Setup

first off..I've done my fair share of the search button for u whiners jk jk

for the new hiflo setup on my camaro, im debating exhaust setups. First and foremost, I DO NOT WANT RASP OR DRONE. ive dealt with this before, and it is unbearable. i opted to go with the 3" downpipe, and im thinking of running a cutout with the magnaflow catback. I really dunno what this is gona sound like.

for performance, i got the cutout so im not to worried about that. but for driving around town or quick dumb little races, i wana have something that flows pretty well, sounds good (not too quiet, but not obnoxious where I'm gona get the neighbors pissed), and as mentioned, doesnt rasp or drone.

money will become scarce as this winter project is gona kill me, so please dont suggest crazy priced **** either, thanks

any suggestions/experiences?...thanks

I like the magnaflow catback on my car. It's really quiet around town. No drone at all, I can actually have phone conversations in my car cruising on the interstate. Sounds good at WOT. I have yet to dyno it though on my new setup.

I was probably going to run the bullet muffler which is damm near a straight pipe. I would have that come off the 3.5" DP and go with a single sided exhaust out the passenger rear. I also could just couple the DP to my Hooker catback right now and be done with it. I will see when the time comes.

Good luck
Andy

So it has to be quiet powerful and cheap. Not asking for much are you?

I can tell you the best cheap way to have a nice quiet exhaust is simply run a smaller pipe aft of your cutout. Something like a 2.5" with a bend or two should be quiet. That is going to kill some power though, no mistake.

Just run the stock cat-back and install an electric or vacuum/boost cutout after the down pipe. That way you have a no drone, cheap exhaust that will make the most power!! Best of both worlds!!

Turbo quiets things down pretty good. I have stock the TTi street kit, it's I pipe goes into my stock over axel which has a cut out in it, then to the stock muffler. I honestly have never closed my cut out since I got the kit installed, but it isn't that loud with open cut out. No drone or anything, the turbo gets rid of that.

On a good sized twin turbo just run a dual 3" with bullet mufflers.. No need for a X or H pipe..

The truck is going to get dual 3" ss with a magnaflow bullet running on the outside of the frame rail. and exiting in front of the tire thru the bed side...

On a single turbo f body I would depending on intended power output run 2.5 to 3" duals with a Y at the end of the down pipe....

could you compare it to anything? I was thinking about putting a xr-1 on my 4'' dp but i wasnt sure how loud it would be. I want it to be quite quiet.

would there be a big noise diff between the borla and similar ones like a magnaflow or dynomax ultraflo? Other than being all stainless, shiny and expensive is there a big difference?

The quietest exhaust systems that make excellent power are SLP's two on the left and dual dual.

FWIW, the Magnaflow catback for the f-bodys is pretty restrictive, thier universal straight through mufflers are very good though.

A few comparisons-

This is the SLP two on the left (with a 3.5in intermediate pipe)-

This is a 4 inch exhaust with magnaflow muffler-

http://www.ls1speed.com/movies/intmd8.WMV

This is no muffler, just an open downpipe. (Ran the same MPH with the 4in magnaflow, so that muffler was not restrictive at this level.)

I was refering to muffler construction.. Saying that a Magna race bullet and a XR1 are built the same... Its just two short tube stubs.. A big swaged tube, a section of straight perf tube and some packing...

Why pay big $ for it?

Magnaflow as far component and muffler design they are just fine.. They just
tend to go a bit conservative on ALL their bolt on aftermarket system. Domestic and import.. I think they try to target more the "sporty" market with their bolt on systems... However tuners with 1 off ala carte sytems to match their full custom machine have proven on a dyno that they do flow very well.
