Default Temp sender into block???

Okay, I am getting close to FINALLY getting my car running again.
I decided to use a GOOD temp. gauge. Went with a couple other AutoMeter guages as well.
Anyways...
I am trying to use the sender into the block on the passenger side coolant drain plug. Bought the metric adaptor and installed that into the block no problem.
Now...I run the sender down to this location. Again....nothing too tough.
I went to put the sender into the block....and the sending unit is too long.
Is an adaptor needed to increase the depth of the hole??
Block isn't an LS1 block, it is an LQ9. Is this hole possibly different in these two blocks??

I believe Auto Meter makes a shorter sender. Or use the sender you have and use the location on the block by the starter.

I see AutoMeter makes extensions as well.
I am trying to use the location by the starter. That long sender doesn't want to fit into the block though. Starting to think maybe that is a difference between the blocks as well.
