search this forum and you'll find lots of posts (search terms "SD MAF")

but in my case...

SD tuning .. easy.... car runs good... if i went back to a MAF i'd have to recal my MAF

temp/alt have minimal effects on SD tuning...

and ... you need to allow more than an hour or so between replyes

Nobody tunes their car in SD. If you did it, you'd be the first. Go ahead. Be a pioneer!

SD is nice if your tune is accurate, and you retune whenever you mod. MAF is more tolerant of learning mods. SD removes the MAF as a restriction, but if you calibrate a ported MAF, its just as good. On camed cars, the stock MAF calibration does not take into consideration low RPM reversion. The other side of the coin is that the MAF seems to smooth out my low rpm low load bucking (caused by my cam) that hapens at steady MAP. If you have the OBD-II scan, youll need the MAF to pass. I run with a MAF, but I spend most of my time Tuning the VE tabel MAFless.

Cost should not be a factor here. Just talk to the guy about what you want. Some tuners perfer one or the other.

I'd like to know how many shops actually will do a SD tune if requested & how much they charge. I charge the same price for either or.

Hey Brandon hwo are you going to pass inspection are you just going to get the sniffer done? Or are things different where you're at? I want an SD tune when I get the cam put in but that's the onlything I've got stopping me.

So plug in the MAF before you go to the inspection station, then pull it back out after they give you the sticker.

The stock MAF table was off +/- 30% on my car after I tuned my VE. Unlikely it would pass smog with that kind of incorrect fueling.

The good news is that it ran great in SD mode without the MAF after the VE was tuned with an LC1 wideband/HPT 2.0 EIO.

I should have specified that the tuner may need to calibrate your MAF table and do some hand interpolation, but this shouldnt take long. A short log file and abut 5 minutes tweaking the bin will get it close enough.
When you pull the plug on the MAF, it defaults back to SD mode

Good article...

It sums up basically what I'll tell people from the start with SD tuning...if you aren't competent with your tuning software, don't even mess with it. You need to make changes to the tune for almost every single engine modification you make. If you aren't willing to do that, keep the MAF.

As for me, my engine is deaf, dumb, and blind. It only does what I tell it (I run a full time Open Loop SD tune).

So supposely one has hptuners and wideband.
I go into MAF-less mode, tune the car in SD mode using this wonderful write up ( http://texasfbody.org/hpt/SDTuningVE/ ) to get that 13.0 AFR.

Then what ? I plug the MAF back in, but now it needs to be tuned with MAF....How do I do that ?

How I did mine was : Log with HPT to get Maf Hz and dynamic air. Use the AUTOMAF spreadsheet RedHardSupra put together (in the forum stickies), and/or if you have a wideband you can use the MAF AFR error % histogram to adjust your MAF table.

There's lots of good reading in those stickied posts.
