Default piston rings?

I know this may sound kind of dumb and I think I know the answer, but can piston rings break? or do they just wear? I just bought my z less than 3 months ago from a shady dodge dealership. it's got 48000 on the clock, and after a whole mishap with the car, they said I have worn piston rings, and that's not covered by warranty because they are worn and not broken. I was not aware that you could physically BREAK a ring. Can somebody help me out here?

I'm sure you can break a ring, but it's not likely on a stock motor. If you are breaking rings, you have some other major issues to worry about instead.

that's what I thought. The dealer is saying they wouldn't be under warranty unless they were broken, and my argument is that it's almost impossible to break a ring on a stock motor.

OK, I just pulled the plug on my lunch break and the plug has a good amount of oil on it. I'm assuming this is the piston rings being worn. Is there any other explanation for this??
