Default Possible Driveshaft Length Problem.

I recently bought a new driveshaft that the manufacturer stated they knew what size it had to be for a 12 bolt and 4l60e combo. I know I should've measured it, but they reassured me that they knew already.

Ever since I put it in, there was always quite a bit of length between the end of the trans and the front of the DS yolk. My friend said it's normal, but I'm still not sure

I've been having problems with the trans ever since and I think it's due to low fluid level.

There are no leaks and I started thinking:

Is it possible that the driveshaft can slip out enough to leave a gap for a few seconds for some fluid to come out now and then? That would add up over some time.

Everytime I come to a stop, the rearend kind of "clicks" in or out and then does it again when I start to accelerate.

Is this a possiblility or not due to the teeth that the driveshaft grabs on?

Thanks in advance.

Can you get under there, and physically move the DS in/out?? Or see any residue from where it has been comin' out?

The sound you're probably hearing is the backlash in the gears (or I suppose some other loose component). The driveshaft shouldn't make noise unless the u-joints are damaged (or retainer clamps are not tightened). Fluid can leak from the slip-yoke if the seal is damaged on the transmission.

If it was the driveshaft was short enough for the fluid to pass the seal, your driveshaft would have probably fallen off.

I'm going to jump under there and see if I can see signs of fluid at the tailshaft.

Steve: I guess that's good news.

Oh, I'll be calling you next week to put that order together man.

Thanks guys,
Fernando

I agree, the driveshaft would of fallen out. You should not have a problem with the driveshaft length for your combination. Bob
